The Tillya Kari Madrassah in Registan square is the biggest madrassah that Ulug Beg, the famous astrologer and grandson of Tamerlane built and it differed in that its curriculum, in addition to mandatory theological disciplines, offered secular subjects, such as mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and literature. Among the eminent teachers invited to lecture there were the astronomer Kazy-zadeh-Rumi, called 'The Plato of His Age' and the mathematician Ali-Kushchi and Ulug Beg himself lectured astronomy there.
The refined decorative scheme of the madrassah consisted, for the most part of contrasting combinations of soothingly-toned baked brick or marble and vibrant, glittered glazed tiles, embellished with which are not only the outside walls and minarets, but also surprisingly enough such a crucial structural element as the portal. The tympani above the entrance arch are filled with the sky-blue tracery of the knot -motif design with mosaic insets. The ornamental painted designs of the interior decoration, fragments of which have survived to this day.

Hello Abmdsudi - I'm not sure which of the two shots I prefer. Both reveal the intricacies of the design and craftsmanship very well. The colours are fabulous and the areas where the sunlight strikes the mosaics really come to life. Breathtaking decoration and two very fine shots. Warm regards Rosemary

Abmdsudi, beautiful tilework that you've captured here, in interesting and textured light. Wonderful symmetry to this one, as well, but broken up nicely by the sunlit regions.

You're capturing well this architecture by a good angle and excellent tone, so it's interesting and impressive to see the architecture's inside with unique shape, blue color and brown outline. It semms to the feather of typical Islam architecture. It's impressive in marble line of roof in each section.
Have a nice weekend.

beautiful decorations of this madrassah, I not would say a heresy, but I think it was much used lapis lazuli, or maybe it's just the color very similar, I know that nearby there are mines in Afghanistan with the finest quality, good management light and sharp and wonderful geometry...have a good WE..

a great and most effective composition that makes our impression of this amazing architectural style and our wonder even stronger. Your superb point of view brings us much closer to the elaborate patterns and beautiful colours, we can study and admire the stunning details and feel wrapped in the beauty and elegance of this art. Depth, sharpness and lighting are really crucial for a photo like this and you've managed them all marvellously. I love the alertness this view offers to the spirit, the magnificent designs and colours and the delightful intrusion of the light on the upper tier. The workshop picture is wonderful too. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely day,

a magnificent close-up in this composition, in which you show us the great beauty and the decorative wealth of this wonderful architecture, by means of the shapes and the geometry of the entrance of the Mosque.
The management of the exposure is very good, I like the effect of the sun light on these delicate mosaics.
A great complementary shot in the WS.
A beautiful work, my friend.

The first image on TE that I have seen from Uzbekistan, and what a beautiful image it is. The mosaic work here is magnificent and I love the upwards POV with the small amount of sun light. And a fascinating note to top it all off, thank you.
sacimar (28329) 2012-07-31 5:16
this is another good image of this building, I like the art work of the facades, the composition is beautiful with the light and shadow areas, well done,
Waylim (25436) 2012-08-05 0:01
Sorry, I have been busy and not as active here, missed a few of your wonderful shots. This one is really wonderful with all the mosaic design. As impressive as those that I have seen in Morocco, could even be more impressing being there in person. Love the deep blue of the tiles. Excellent detials, great POV from the cornor and the part in the sun really give good contrast but not over exposed.
Angshu (56760) 2012-08-07 20:57
Quite exemplary! Yes, if the shaft of light was not there to brighten up the brilliant mosaics, this shot would have been 'boring', if I may use that word. But the light falls on the small filigreed window creating such a mystifying atmosphere! I continue to be amazed by the details of the workmanship.
I liked the WS shot as well, where the vertical framing & larger piece of lit up area makes us see 'more'...but I prefer your original version slightly more. Fine set of work!
