Photographer’s Note
The carefully restaurated ruins of old Merv, once an important city along the Silk Road. The Silk Road lost its importance when Vasco da Gama discovered the sea way from Europe to Asia.

Hello Monica,
From the thumbnail I thought this was a natural rock formation. Interesting ruin & well shown. TFS.
Best regards,
Latiff.

Hello, Monica -
I also thought it was a rock formation, but then I saw the title (we're visiting Merv next year, so I've been reading up on it). Very interesting fortress.
The Silk Road, by the way, was still in use, if not quite the same as before, until around the XIX century.
Regards,
Dan

Hello Monica,
This is such an interesting piece of architecture. How it's just sitting there in the middle of this wide area of land. Do you just take transportation to this structure, or do you have to pay to enter this area. Can you go right up to it?
Regards,
David
