Photographer’s Note

Last week was the Buffalo Festival at Chonburi. It is one of my favorite festivals. The rice farmers come in from the provinces with their beloved water buffaloes to compete in the various classes and also to hold the thrilling and comical Buffalo races (most of the riders get thrown). The competition is fierce and the farmers are keen judges of a good buffalo. Actually, for the first year, I didn't go, because my Canon is in repair (my fault not Canon's) and I have lost the battery charger of the Nikon and have to wait two weeks for another. So this is a shot from last year (with the Nikon) The buffalos are waiting in the shade to be lead to the show ring and their anxious keeper squats in the sun, watching over them. The water buffalo, is the main domestic animal in South East Asian, they are much prized and loved by their owners. They have been the loyal friend of the rice farmer for centuries.
