Photographer’s Note

This is a young actor in the Chinese Gnu theatre. These traditional plays about the doings of the gods and performed before Taoist temples on certain auspicious occasions. They are performed primarily to pay honor to the Gods. This actor was waiting in the dark for his time to go on. The singing of the Mandarin songs is done by elderly classical singers behind the scene, while younger actors play the role and mime on stage. This very ancient art form still exists but it is slowly dying out, as younger people tend not to be so interested.
