I’ve been travelling through Bangkok for many years, the Hotel I stay at faces West and the room I always have is on the 34th floor. Its interesting that for my last post I uploaded a Sunset shot through some of the worst pollution I’ve ever seen. This shot, taken only a few days later the visibility was in excess of 15 kilometres. I’d been watching these large Equatorial Thunderheads building for most of the afternoon, lots of lightening but no rain., then all of a sudden the clouds began to break up giving way to a glorious sunset. I’m almost sure that at the moment I pressed the shutter the last of the remaining Thunderheads erupted with a huge bolt of lightening, illuminating the heart of the cloud with this monstrous burst of energy. Nature is just breathtakingly incredible, don’t you think.

The sky is like from a scifi-movie. No doubt weather conditions had to be rare to give those lights and clouds on this city. And you were just on the right place high above the street level to capture it together with illuminated skyscrapers.

Hi Peter, amazing view, with that fantastic sunset sky on the back of the skyscrapers of Bangkok.
excellent POV and timing too.
Dpbours (222) 2008-07-02 7:59
You're surely having a room with a view!
Yep, you were lucky here. No pollution, no smog, a nice wide view with very interesting build up of clouds as you indicate! A bit colour noise in the darker grey shadow parts, but a nice sunset it is!
velocista (895) 2008-07-02 8:10
impressive photo with these quite strong colors!! very good pov and sharpness. i think that the color of the frame is not the best one. cheers

Vivid, dramatic. I can imagine Arnold Schwarzenegger saying, "I will be back… yet again" while looking up at a sky like this. Great work Peter!
westozman (3193) 2008-07-03 5:02
You nailed it with this one, Pete! The Oly 8080 is a great camera for this kind of shot, too: great colours and sharpness. Just a suggestion: try cropping off the bottom of the shot up to the lower river bank level, and maybe some off the sky at the top to give more of a 'wide-screen' view to really give the shot a more dramatic effect.
lucski (3691) 2008-07-03 14:59

composition and POV for me are perfect.
very well done
TFS greetings lukasz

Hi Peter, fine shot of this event. Although I've only ever stopped briefly in Bangkok I find it remarakable to see a clear sky. I thought it never happened. Exposure was perfect, with all elements of the shot visible. cheers, Steve

Poetic, but dramatic.
Part in colour, buildings part in B&W.
Upside nature, downside construction.
Two worlds in one.

Uma bela foto com cores maravilhosas, essencialmente este alaranjado do céu.
Bonita composição, detalhes e luzes.

what a superb pic this is, it is the kind of dramatic scene I have been searching for for years but has so far eluded me. You make me so envious, fabulous photograph though...congratulations.

luisafonso (862) 2008-07-13 7:03
Amazing sky Peter. And great exposure. You achieved great light management on this one. But nature indeed helped. :) The colors are awesome.
steliosk (4802) 2008-07-13 17:20
it looks 3D, very difficult hour but the outcome is excellent.
Great exposure and colour, I'd say HDR/DRI method used here.
My congratulations for this flawless shot.

That lovely colours of the sky create a lovely atmosphere for sure! The depth, also good, helps in this point really well!

I liked to think that we have gorgeous sky and sunsets here in Calgary but seeing what I see now,I think that Mother Nature`s gift are endless and luckily for us,there are people like you out there,to gather those gifts.
I`m a Star Trek fan and this looks like a holodeck image:)
Thank you very much,
Gregtom (7167) 2008-07-15 23:13
Very nice evening portrait of the city! I like the exposure control and saturation of colors. This warm tone of the sunset looks really great!
alftrek (3270) 2008-07-17 15:41
The sunset backdrop is absolutely spectacular for a city shot, with good exposure on the FG buildings. Would have been perfect if you were lucky enough to catch the lightning in this frame on a long exposure setting.
danasam (1075) 2008-07-21 5:11
Hi Peter, what a fantastic photo, great POV, and excellent composition. wonderful and lovely colors. i like the red reflections on the side of the building glass. very well done.
Adrique (609) 2008-07-25 8:18
Hi Peter, I strongly agree with you - nature can be incredible.
And this shot (as well as your note) proves it - a heavenly skyscape to be soon interrupted by a massive bolt. I like the contrast between the artificial lighting (with a "Matrix"-greenish tint) and the art of natural forces. Really a impressing view.
Ninello52 (7257) 2008-07-26 7:19
Silversnow (2319) 2008-07-29 9:47
Superb sunset you have there, the exposure is nearly perfect and the colors are just stunning :)
abulafia (4900) 2008-08-09 3:50
This is by far one of the best views of bangkok I have seen!
Amazing to see so much visibility, usually everything is covered by smog.
jimkilgallon (0) 2008-09-02 4:11
Sublime work, it is a fantastic urban sunset, nature at its best.
paololg (31448) 2008-09-06 12:52
I was in Bangkok two weeks ago, and although I was only to the 12th floor, I have been able me to also admire the stupendous nighttime effect of this great city.
I have to do you really the compliments for this suggestive sunset, almost mystical, that pleasantly opposes with the lights of the city. Really a beautiful photo, sincere compliments.
mikele_pl (2400) 2008-09-10 3:11
what a great sunset shot. The colours are so rich and intense. You manage the light very well. Thanks for sharing
denisn72 (8300) 2008-11-13 16:04
Amazing skyline in the foreground. I like very much the colours of the sky and the texture of the clouds. The view is stunning from the 34th floor. You had a really great show from your room. Thanks for sharing! Well done!

gunbud (34066) 2009-02-03 16:40
Beautiful blend of blue, pink, gold and purple to this tropical sunset.
You have managed the difficult and chaning light conditions very well.
Beautiful modern skyline seen against the dramatic sky.
vizugonesailing (338) 2010-05-12 12:39
The sky is definitely amazing in this photograph and is probably the best cityscape I have seen.
I tend to shy away from large cities, especially one like Bangkok, I know I'm wrong and probably miss some interesting experience...
This was a great POV and composition and the buildings with good details to wonder around until we are pulled away to the sky.
Superb photo I will add to my favourites. Thanks

Good evening Tired & Emotional
Gawd there's nothing good on telly at the moment. So I must resort to critiquing some photos (or else develop a serious drinking habit). This is a superb sunset shot, it almost looks like an HDR the definition is so good and colours so rich. Amazing sky, it looks like the furnaces of hell opening up. Amazing shot, nice work.
Check ya later
