This is modern Bangkok, or more correctly, Grungtep (often spelled Krung Thep), the capital of Thailand, where I was born and raised.
Bangkok is the old name of the city back when it was a village. It means the Village of Olives, I think. Bang, pronounced "bahng," is a version of bahn, which means house or group of houses, and kok, more correctly gog with unvoiced "g"'s, is perhaps (I'm guessing) short for magog, which is olives. Please correct me if you know better!!
By the way, Thailand is a SINGLE-STATE country, but I had to choose "Bangkok" as the state because of the choices on this site. I'm a native, so I know that the only state in Thailand is Thailand itself!!
