Took this photo in Chiang Mai. The blue color vehicle is the ever famous tut-tut in Thailand. The red color pick up van is what they call 'songthaew' or so called mini bus.
Getting a tut-tut is very easy, just flag one down along the road ride(any direction is ok as they can make a quick u-turn everywhere). Tell the driver where you wanted to go and negotiate the price, then off you go. Pay the driver once you get to your destination.

As for the mini bus, there are several different colours of it which categorized the routes then they are driving on. In Chiang Mai city normally you see the red color one. Just flag one down and tell him your destination, if he is driving on that route then he will say OK and tell you the price. Negotiate (although its should be very cheap) then hop on to the back of the vehicle. You will be taken along with some other passengers which is on the same route (Max around 10 persons per vehicle). There's a small button on the roof of the mini bus. Just ring it when you want to stop. Then hop off and pay the driver. Its actually very easy and cheaper compared to tut-tut.
