| The former capital of Thailand (from 1350 to 1767)was Ayutthaya, located about 50 miles north of Bangkok. It was a center for international commerce and culture (the kingdom even had ties to Louis XIV of France) and was also an important religious center. It entered its "golden age" in the mid-18th century but then was invaded by two Burmese armies in 1765; after a seige the ctiy was finally captured and destroyed in 1767. According to many Thais, there is still some tension between Thailand and its western neighbor Burma (now Myanmar) because of religious desecration (defacing of Buddha images) that occurred when the city was burned. The telltale signs of these can still be seen at the site in the numerous headless Buddhas around the complex. |
