Photographer’s Note
I was in Maya Bay, famous for the movie "The Beach" with Leonardo Di Caprio.
It is a very crowdy place, it is difficult to enjoy the beauty and also to shoot any picture without lots of tourists.
So I decided to capture just some tourist there. I noticed this couple close to me, a very young Thai girl with an old white man. The man was caressing the girl, they were not talking but just sitting together.
This is a quite candide picture, I had been very careful that the man wouldn't notice me. (I hope he is not a TE member!! he had no camera.... :-)))
Sexual tourism is a problem in Thailand but not only there.
It is worse when very young girls are implicate.
(I decided to change the title of this post since what I write is not related just with these two persons, I don't know if they were on the point of doing what they seemed to; I wanted to tell some thoughts about a kind of tourism)

I'm sorry- but I have issues with people who photograph others and make judgements where they really have no right to do so.
Did you ask this man or this young lady if you could take their photo? Did you explain to them that you were going to be posting this photo on the internet and making suggestions that this man is a sexual predator? Did you furthermore ask for the young ladies ID to see how old she is?
Yes this man is an older gentleman- and she is evidentally younger but not necessarily a minor. I have lived in Asia for many years- and Asian women do have a tendency of looking younger then they are.
Yes- I agree that there is a problem with sexual tourism that needs to be addressed and eraticated. However, I also believe in the right to a fair trial- which I do not believe you are doing here.

- Dan

Hi Livia,
I have to agree with Daniel.
I can see nothing "wrong" or "forbidden" in this PHOTO. Perhaps this lady is a prostitute, but she could also be an adult one. Or this European man has a Thai girlfriend or wife. You can´t be sure that this girl is a child prostitute, or do you have any evidence for it?
I´m sure sex tourism is a big problem in Thailand - but on this photo I just see a lady and a man sitting together on the beach.

I travelled for ten years more or less in S.E. Asia, and one of the most terrifiant thing that i saw in all the countries (Except Burma) was the sexual tourism.
There are entire city or villages that are colonies of old white men, finding young asian women.
and unfortunally the largest part of the searchers find the victims.
some years ago i went in Thailand with one of the first low coast made ny a German company. A Frankfurth-Bkk flight.
me and my girlfriend on a B747 full of men with over 50-60 years.
I have prejudices?
i think bad about them?
maybe.
But i saw to many old fat white men went around in Chaweng, Lamai, southern Cambodia or in Danand and Saigon with young, young asian girls.
too young.
And i think that Livia posted that image also cause in Italy in the past 2 years that problems was for many times on prime time in TV, with reports from Pattaya and other similar brothel cities of S.E.Asia.
Maybe she did an error posting the faces of that couple. maybe she must did cut out the faces.
so, the Political Correct should be respected, so there will be not post that have a strong criticism more to Livia and the image, than to the horrible sexual tourism!
what there is in that image?
a Granpa?
a normal copule with just 40 years of difference?
or someone want to tell us that "asian girls have a tendency of looking younger then they are"?
i see just SOMTHING OF WRONG.
I'm agree that we cannot do a trial to that man. we don't know nothing about him.
but the image, and the post are related to a big problem, and that image can be use a a report of that problem.

Ciao Livia,

Complimenti.
Ciao

hi Livia,
Maybe a "stollen photo" but are many here..
an interesting subject, for me there is no doubt about the comercial romance between those people.
Maybe people were so generous for the tsunami, maybe for re building their paradise...

Livia,

Hi Livia,
First of all, I am sorry for you that your picture is creating such a debate... I am sure you did not expect this...
Living in Thailand for the past 2 years (I know it is not a lot), I have to agree with Kevinos (who lives in Thailand too) on most of his remarks.
We can not judge without knowing...
TE is such a wonderful site where we have the power to show how beautiful is our planet and its people... You have the right to show such picture and I respect your reaction toward this strange situation...
I myself have chosen to show the wonders of Thailand, "my" country through my pictures... I want people to see Thailand for its beauty... not its "deseases"... It does not especially mean I close my eyes on those serious issues... I just focus on what is good in this world...
Thanks for sharing such an important picture! :)

Hi Livia
I totally agree with some comments here, i don't think that we are here to give any judgement regarding those people, without knowing anything from them, living in Thailand for many years i can't deny that prostitution and sexual tourism is still a problem. Now let's try to show a bit more what has been done already, all new set of laws and their application, all improvements, let's be positive
PS, I like very much the way those 2 generations people are looking in the same direction

You've been there.. You saw it...You've captured.
Veni…Vidi..Vici..
Good for you, Livia.
One more interesting lesson for us. That's what websites are for.
Let us argue about it. Let us polarize our opinions about the photo. Let's fight about it.
You did your homework. You've raised the temperature of our blood.
Good girl.
'Do' it, Livia…Just 'do' it…You do better to the world by 'do' it, than those who 'don't do' it… g.g. '

Hmmm, we never considered the possibility that she is seeking out a man with money and taking advantage of his want to be with a younger, beautiful woman...
Did I touch a nerve? That's the point, all possibilities are on the table. Despite the abundance of such activities as you speak of, this may not be the case here...that's how nasty stereotypes are created. It is always easier to sit back and judge than to be direct and address the situation as you see it. Go up to these people, let them know what you think of their choices and current situation...then wait for the reaction. To post a picture and say, this is child prostitution by a fat white guy is ridiculous. Some have struggled long and hard to prevent a person, persons, nation, nations from making statements witout adequate facts. There is a good chance you are right, and you have a right to your opinion...but, what if your wrong? Does that matter or are you content to believe what you assume...I am not. I fight against the learned behavior that tells me to think a certain way; to believe a certain thing about a group of people; to look at someone different and think that I am better. I have gained many benefits from ignoring what I'm told and finding out for myself.
Chris
