Photographer’s Note
I know...it's probably the most touristical market of the Thailand...and i think that the Thay Governement pay the old ladies on the boat to go around all the morning for the joy of the tourist with the cameras!
click, click, click, click....this is the sound that there are in all the floating market. on the streets and the bridges, on the boats, on the banks...everywhere some hundreds of tourist: click, click, click....and me too of course!
we went there in late September 1996 when there were few tourists. "Only" some hundreds.
Some friends told me that in August or December there are some thousands of tourists from the whole world.
It was my first floating market, it was a quite good exsperience, but there was something of innatural in all that....there were more Europeans backpackers and Americans with Tour Operators than...Thais at the market!
click, click, click, click....20 tourist that shooted the only one monk at market....terrible!
(i was one of the 20)
click, click, click, click....
some years later we visited the floating market of Cai Rang in Vietnam, along the Mekong, in the Delta.
there were some hunderds of boats, some thousands of Viets and not more than 15 tourist in 2 only small boats.
...ok...why i posted the Damnoen Saduak image and not the Cai Rang ones?
simply....in Cai Rang there was the monsoon...and we were on the open air 3 meters boat...in Damnoen there was a great sunny day.
we cannot have all the better thing at the same moments!

Hi Paolo,
These market on the water are really impressive.
I like the way you have framed this photo, in a vertical layout. Very efficient.
Bravo!

buon giorno paolo, so well seen this scene, excellently scattered boats of different types: cabs, carriers, kiosks, everything you want you find there; was there a cinema, too?
ciao, jerzy

I know exactly what you mean by the over-tourist side of the market. I was there and likewsie still had to take photos, no matter how sick to the stomach I felt about the experience. Still, in this picture you have captured an image that probably happily would sit in any tourist brochure - it still looks authentic. It doesn't look anywhere near as contrived as well know it is.

I like your note, it's true of so many places that we visit as tourists, travellers, backpackers whatever we want to call ourseleves.
As for the picture: I like the composition, you have captured the hustle and bustle of the market very well. It's maybe a little dark in the top right but that's how the scene was so not much you could do there.
Good work.

even though there were a lot more tourists in Damnoen Saduak, I liked this one much better than the one in Cai Rang : the boats are huge, and you can't see much from the water. all the engines of the boat make too much noise... I was expecting to see a real floating market with little boats, so I was very disappointed in Vietnam.
about your pic, your point of view is nice ( it is taken from the bridge, right ?), giving an idea of the atmosphere of the market.

Ciao Paolo,
Yes it does look busy ! There's a lot of action going on on this canal and I like here your choice of portrait framing to match the canal shape and accentuate the depth.
Have a nice day,

Your note has caught the point perfectly. This is an example of tourism destroying what it goes to see. Not long ago, this was a real, living market, where Thai people bought and sold fish and vegitables. As the tourists arrived the real merchants were forced out and it became a nasty, fake tousrits specticle. You have made a nicely composed picture of it and you clearly understand what it is about. This is not a picture of Thailand, this is a picture of what mass tourism can do to Thailand.

It is a real traffic jam on the river! I like the compo, because you can see a global view of this market, but also what is carried in the baoats and sold on the market.
It is very interesting. Nice note too,
Yannick

Hi Paolo - touristy but still very interesting and colourful. I never went to this market because of the reasons you describe in your note. I also skipped the Mekong markets because nowadays they too have become click....click...click

I know partially the feeling of seeing more tourists than locals… In fact in the Lisbon downtown, except for the rush hour, it’s almost difficult to see Portuguese people! :-)
Still despite all the tourists I believe this must be a very nice experience and a very interesting place.
Nice framing, taking advantage of the sense of depth and perspective lines. Nice colors too. Some more sharpness and bringing some details from the shadow could enhance this image.

Comercial tourism or not, it's still a great image Paolo and you click, click, clicked just right with a nice perspective...well done mate. I like the muddy water - it could be the scene for Charlie and the chocolate factory!
Cheers.
