One in a series of pictures taken on a boat trip on the Mekong River in Northern Thailand.
This area where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma meet is known as the Golden Triangle. Once infamous as a centre of opium smuggling it is now sold in Thailand as a tourist attraction. The article on the Golden Triangle in Wikipedea (click here for more information) seems to suggest that the opium trade continues in one form or another though much less overtly.
This picture was taken at the start of the trip in Thailand; on the opposite side of the river lies Laos; just to the left slightly further upstream on the Laos side lies Burma.

Bonjour, cher Stephen,
Merci de nous proposer d'aussi belles compositions. Quant à cette pirogue à rallonge, elle est tout simplement extraordinaire à mes yeux.
Un sujet très intéressant et très bien présenté.

Yes these are the boats criss crossing the Mekong. I remember them well, especially when two Laos men loaded a huge cupboard on one of these boats ... incredible what they will pack into the boats.
I like candid action photography of daily life which I used when working as a press photographer. I still contribute photographs to the DPA in Germany but I do much less then a decade ago. Photography is a part of my life - professional and private - for almost 50 years.

J'ai eu le plaisir de faire une petite croisière dans ce genre d'embarcation très rapide sur le Mékong.L'image est bien construite et nous permet de bien voir le paysage environnant.

a nice panoramic shot that gives us a great idea of the size of the river and also the type of craft that sail its waters. Full of character and the atmosphere of this amazing place. Excellent!
Regards - Brian.

A nicely a composed shot of life in the Mekong Delta. The colorful boats, I imagine "river buses" functioning like the vaporetti of Venice. They are so low that you could drag your hand through the water. What fascinated me in James Bond film in the 1970s, "Man with a Golden Gun," were the high speed canal boats in scenes of Bangkok. Do they still exist?

Ciao e buona serata

I'm amazed how sharp the prows of those boats are, they look like they could cut through ice. You. Poured an excellent sensation of the moment here, one of those images I feel I could just step into, helped of course by the path leading nicely into the scene.
All the best

Hello Stephen, the boat appears to be sitting a little bit low in the water for my liking, and it`s only got a few people on board yet! With the three sleek boats facing into the frame there is a nice feeling of optimism and drama.

each time I see boats and harbours, my heart jumps a little bit higher and this impression is a very moody one. The photographer’s perspective is excellent. The gentle light makes the image very attractive. My compliments!

Hello Stephen - We crossed the Mekong at this point before taking trip down to Luang Prabang and I loved watching the water traffic plying the river with passengers and goods aboard the long tails. This shot gives us a taste of that experience. Your whole Thailand series stirs me to visit again. TFS and warm regards rosemary

Inviting photograph! Always good to take a boat ride to look around and relax! It looks hot though, but the flags tell us it was breezy!
TFS - congrats,

a lovely downward view on the jetty, the boats, the river and the opposite bank. I like very much the arrangement of the banks and the other elements in the frame. The boat about to depart evokes a feeling of anticipation while the one travelling to the opposite direction provides contrast and balance. The colours are wonderful, I like how they fade from the bright and well defined foreground to the distant background. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely evening,

That long boat in the rear was similar to the Lao boat trips from Luang Phrabang. The fg speedboats were the alternative to flying. I opted for the latter rather than an 8 hour trip down the Mekong cramped up in a noisy speedboat. Good sharpness and the people add scale and context. Well composed using the rule of thirds with the horizon well positioned on the 1/3 axis. Tfs!
