SUBURB OF PARADISE II
Two years ago I had submitted the photo, SUBURB OF PARADISE I, from the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea.
The present photo from Maya Bay on the Thai Island of Phi Phi Leh may not be Paradise, but it could well be another suburb of Paradise. The unimaginably beautiful scenery served as the location for the 2000 Leonardo di Caprio film, The Beach. What is ironic is that just six years ago Phuket was render into a suburb of hell by the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
Just four days ago, on July 20, 2010, I was on a full day boat trip around the Andaman Sea, visiting Phi Phi, Maya and Bamboo Islands. The highly salty water is as clean and pristine as one would hope Paradise would also feature. I went swimming, gorging on spicy Thai food, and shooting photos at abandon.
I was in Phuket to give a talk at a conference. I thought that taking a boat ride would energize me for my upcoming lecture the next day (although perhaps others in my shoes would have waited until the day after they gave a keynote speech). As it turned out, the choice was the right one for me. I thought I gave an inspired talk, and all 24 copies on hand of my books on Leonardo (da Vinci", not di Capreo"), Math and the Mona Lisa sold out quickly.
I had with me a small pocket Nikon S600, and a HD Flip (video camera), but in this instance I used my Nikon D200 with a 28-70 DX Nikkor lens, capped with a circular polarizing filter. The camera was set on ISO 200, and otherwise in Program mode.
In the next few days and weeks I will post other shots from Phuket, Thailand; as well as from New Delhi, Chandigarh and Agra (site of the Taj Mahal) in India, which I also visited the days before going to Thailand.

Hi Bulent, you are very lucky to have lectures in such places! The islands of Thailand are really piradise islands. I was near Krabi and also went for two boat trips, one was to the island known from James Bond movie. I visited also the village on the sea. After it was this terrible tsunami there, I fear some of the places exist no more. Very beautiful shot, I am looking forward to seeing more from India.
Warm regards Malgorzata

Uzun bir aradan sonra cenneten bir parçayla dönmüşsünüz hocam. Burası sanırım tsunamiden en fazla etkilenen yerlerden biriydi. Umarım toparlanabilmişlerdir. Saygılar, Tolga

A truly stunning picture. I like how beach and the hills are sort of lurking behind the palm trees. As a viewer you almost get a sense of anticipation and giddiness, as if you can't wait to get on the beach. The difficult lighting conditions have been handled really well. The sky looks great even though we can see the details in the dark foreground as well.

I see you've been travelling... this looks like the famous James Bond island, it is the one ? Good peep through the bushes giving a glimpse of the paradisiac beach, the sand near the water is possibly a little too bright
Have a nice day JY

You found a good pov here, I like the way you framed the beach, with all these plants in foreground. These islands must be really great for photos!

What an eye catching shot of Maya Bay! I love the way you framed it with the tropical vegetation. Your POV makes the way to the beach very inviting. The colors seem perfectly natural, details are clear and sharp, and the DOF is excellent. Your travel sounds fabulous! I look forward to seeing more of your pictures.

And you did it again, you framed a very well known destination very different from the usual, your shot is very attractive and has a very powerful DOF. Very nice color hues and sharpness. Good light management as well. Good photo job. Thanks for your critique of my monsoon cloud shot. No I did not use a CPL, and I almost never use it. Olympus is very good in natural color hues ...

une magnifique carte postale de cet endroit où rien ne manque, pas même ces impressionnants rochers. Dommage que cette zone soit la proie des tsunamis.
My best regards.

A pleasant glimpse of paradise through the framing palm trees, which create a good sense of depth and invite you on to the beach to explore further. A very nice ambient light with good colours and sharpness. A lucky man indeed!

Hi dear friend
Nice adventures in paradise.
Interesting POV on the beach with good lights ambiance.
Longroute (19396) 2010-07-25 8:51
If this is only the suburb I can't imagine what paradise would have looked like! (:-) You chose a very good point to frame this lovely coastal scenery, showing only few people, the boats and the incredibly picturesque hills behind. The fresh plants in fg enhance the impression of a wild tropical forest and give the feeling of seeing the beach through a key hole.

I went on these islands in 1988,and stayed 3 days on Phi Phi Leh,and believe me,it was still more beautiful,as it was still not yet touristic, and nobody was here,me and my friend were completly alone!I came back 5 years ago,and it was a disappointment to see so much people!Anyway, this is a spectacular and splendid landscape, and it stays in my mind as one of the most beautiful place in the world! And your picture shows this very well with hte cliffs appearing through the trees, the white sand and the blue water!Superb!

Olá Bulent, I have a strong feel of adventure while looking at this image. Even before I read your note, the famous film "The beach" came to my mind immediately. I guess that it's this very well thought framing that shows the beach as if it was a secret place and only few people know about it. Instead of pirates I see tourists but the feeling is still there. Or may be you're the pirate that found out that your spot was invaded and now you'll have to do something about it to protect your treasure...
Anyway, it's an exciting photo and a great way of starting your gallery from Thailand.
siolaw (38292) 2010-08-05 2:33
Nice view on Eden's neighbourhood through the pandanus plants... Light and colours are vivid and realistic, sharp details too.
Angshu (56760) 2010-08-07 5:15
Dear Professor 'A'
We know o this beach because of the beauty & made famous by the film! Nicely framed with the trees, providing us a peeping view of the karsts and the boats. Difficult to control the exposure on the white sand, but you've done well! Look fwd for your pictures from my country!
With Warm Regards
paura (47186) 2010-08-07 18:54
The scenery is quite beautiful even more from your excellent POV. You brought together many interesting things in a single framework, all in good photometry settings.
Greetings from Brazil, friend.
daddo (27264) 2010-08-11 5:07
Greetings Bulent Bey. Interesting POV, as if you were Robinson Crusoe looking at the new arrivals from your safe spot. Nice combination of vegetation, sand, sea and cliffs. Lovely light near and far. Selamlar. Klaudio.
Docarmo (9767) 2010-08-11 17:36
It is very impressive the strong light in places like that - the sun exposure level is incredible - no need to take pills of Calcium or Vit D... ;-)
You chose a good POV here, very artistic.
Thanks for sharing,
PaulVDV (30647) 2010-08-15 13:49
A glimpse of paradise !
A very beautiful framing with the tropical vegetation on the foreground. These plants occupy a big part of the picture. Yet we get a great view of those high rocks that rise steep out of that blue green water and we also see a bit of the beach and water life.
It looks like a great place to relax for a while. This picture certainly looks very inviting.
Best regards, Paul

Excellent view through the beach vegetation, Bulent, revealed a fine seashore and blue bay and than, a rising green covered rocks.
Impressive sight of a known "paradise" location, people added human scale to this.
My best regards,
*** Just for your information: in Israel we see seagulls only from late autumn till early spring.
