On his first sermon after enlightenment, the Buddha taught an assembly of monks the essence of the Dharma, Law of the Universe.

Buddhist iconography represents edifying moments of His life by postures of the arms, hand and fingers, called Mudras. The Mudra of teaching the Law, is called Vitakka-mudra, and the joining of thumb and index symbolises both the perfection of the realized Truth and the Wheel of the Law, which Dharma is often portrayed as.

Nakhom Pathom, about 60kms west of bangkok is said to be the tallest Buddhist monument in the world, and the town itself one of the earliest centers of Buddhist teaching in Thailand.
