The so-called ladyboys, Kathoeys or the "third gender" are a familiar sight in Thailand where the local society seems to be far more accepting than many. I captured this shot with available light at a caberet show.
Kathoey, a Thai word of Khmer origin, refers to a male to female transgender person or effeminate, cross-dressing gay. Nearly all kathoeys dress as women and many that can afford it will undergo hormone treatment and surgical procedures such as genital reassignment, Adam’s apple reductions and breast implants to cultivate their feminine appearance. Kathoeys are (very) often indistinguishable from women and there are numerous tales of the unsuspecting westerner who hook up with a kathoey in the mistaken belief that their glamorous companion is female.
Frequently attracted to the entertainment, restaurant, retail and fashion trades, popular work for kathoey includes traditionally feminine occupations in cabarets and bar shows, hair & beauty salons, and fashion houses - or as prostitutes. Kathoeys are often extremely glamorous and wear stunning outfits. Many Thai singers, models and movie stars are kathoeys. There are several national beauty contests for kathoey, and the winners are often posted side-by-side with winners of female beauty pageants.

A very fine portrait considering it was captured with available light at a show. I think the B^W is effective. I like the framing and his/her expression is great.

Wow, what a incredible note on Kathoeys with this equally outstanding portrait. Great capture with OOF background. The narrow DOF is superb and the composition as a whole is outstanding. Tfs this nice work Rosemary.
Best wishes to you.

It's a very nice portrait. I like your POV and the framing, giving height and majesty to this woman.
Your framing allows to admire its clothing.
Very good traitment in b&w also.
I like it !

Initially your title did not quite make sense but it did the moment I started reading your note, which is very interesting. But back to the photo....I like colour as much as anyone else but, in certain circumstances, give me a B&W image and you've got me. Such is the case here. Given that these were far from studio conditions, I think you did very well. Perhaps a little more contrast? But I will definitely not try and improve on it with a WS. Much appreciated.

to be shot with available light and at 3200 ISO it's quite an impressive result!
I had heard about ladyboys before but I appreciate your note as it puts the topic into a larger context.
I like how we can see his/her dress and accessories, as they are such an important aspect of their look.

excellent capture of this Kathoeys portrait.
The details are excellent and the presentation is dramatic. I enjoy reading the information you presented.
Very informative and this knowledge is hard to get.
Thanks for sharing such a different explanation of the phenomena.

Un très joli portrait.
Le NB convient parfaitement

The available light was nice and soft to capture all the details with no harsh shadows. I quite like your framing, and your depth of field is good to blur out the background yet maintaining all the necessary sharpness on the person.

very charming portrait shot of super-gender person,
the solid gender is not so solid in human history, quite like black or white thinking,
(Tiresias in Greek mythology was maybe first androgynous)
anyway a beautiful B&W picture from your excellent POV and lighting,
thank you for your excellent shot,

I have not yet a chance to see such show but I have heard much about it. It would be interesting to see, and it seem the social exceptance makes us more accepting of our difference and living in harmony. That is great to see and nice example, not to say that they are not made fun off by the ignorant people. This is still better than some other countries. Beautiful portrait regardless of the low light. Thanks.

This is certainly an unusual picture for TE, and as TE would like to have it, informative about the world ! Of course I knew of the term, english term, but never knew more than the titillating side of the story. Your picture is expressive, your note informative. A Great Combination. I must say too, you produced a great picture under what seem to have been extreme light conditions, and only a little graininess, which even adds to the effect. B&W is absolutely right here too, to minimse effect of the lighting and to enhance the attire of your subject.

Image difficile mais le choix du N&B est excellent en plus les contrastes son bons, moins de gris aurait durcit à coup sur les traits délicats du visage. Ciao/jr

A splendid shot and good light.. I have seen shows of Ladyboy in Pattaya many times as I lead many groups to Thailand.. they are just amazing & unbelievable..
This picture also would have been good in colour as they are really beautiful with make ups and colourful dresses.. Anyways B/W is alo really nice..
