Photographer's Note

I went up to the far north, to the mountains of Pai for a few days to visit our TL buddy ‘Senk’, who lives there.(see http://www.trekearth.com/members/Senk/) From Chiang Mai, It’s a scary four and a half hour ride on a rickety bus along winding roads with steeps drops on each side to reach the little town. The Lanna Kingdom in the far North of Thailand has a culture quite different from the rest of Thailand and was, in fact, only incorporated into Thailand in 1932. It’s cool up in the Mountains of Mai Hong Son and despite having been discovered by the backpackers, it retains something of its ‘Shangri-La’ character. Many of its people belong to various colorful hill tribes. Senk made me very welcome and I had a great time riding about on the back of his motor bike and exploring the mountain scenery. I have never really tried landscape photography before and I was surprised how difficult it is to do. That is, it’s hard to make landscapes interesting. This is a typical view across the high valley in which Pai sits.
