Wat Phan Tao, also written Wat Pantao, is a Buddhist temple located at the heart of old Chiang Mai city, in the junction of Ratchadamnoen Road and Phra Pok Klao Road. The name Wat Phan Tao means "Monastery of a Thousand Kilns". The name is believed to refer to the casting of the numerous Buddha images for its even bigger neighbour, Wat Chedi Luang, located right next door.
The viharn of Wat Phan Tao has a three-tier roof which you can see in the BG. The front façade is simply exquisite. I could say it is one of the most magnificent buildings in Chiang Mai.
The front entrance is guarded by Burmese-style lions, singha in Thai, or chinthe in Burmese.....I this POV to use the lens distortion effect enhance the majestic nature of the magnificent sculpture!

Hello Angshu - I have a particular fondness for Chiang Mai so I am delighted to see this shot. A bustling city yes, but here you have found a beautiful quiet and serene spot. I love the light on the tiled roof, it reveals good textural detail. Nicely balanced composition. I want to go back!!!! Warm regards rosemary

The statue is well placed in the frame. the point of view is showing the details and colors of the roofs and of the burmese lion statue. The late afternoon light is making the colors to stand out. Have a nice day.

Hi A ngshuman,
The have chinthes in Burma but they look a bit differently. breautiful presentatio n of the Thai architecture. But it seems you were not so imnpresse, you show us only few pictures. And I liked Chiang Mai very much, pity it was i n old times, with no digital camera.

A great use of vertical and diagonal lines. A well presented crop allows to concentrate on the staue in FG and nicely lighted roofs. Well chosen viewpoint. Well done Angshuman.

Namaste, my friend Angshuman,
a good low-angle shot here.
The stone lion in foreground is really impressive, and indeed that is a good guard of the entrance of the temple, because its presence intimidates a lot.
I like the dynamic effect of the perspective of the sculpture and of the roofs of the temple, with a few harmonic shapes, very elegant. The low light and the warm tonalities add a lot of beauty into the ensemble.
You have used skillfully the distortion of the lens, and have obtained a magnificent graphical result.
A beautiful work.

A good upward pov on the old weathered stone guarf=dian lion at this picturesque Thai Wat in Chiang Mai. Good sharpness and superb shadow detail despite the strong back-light. The subtle warm cold colour contrast between the blue & yellow is superb! Tfs!
jga (1062) 2012-06-05 3:59
Nice photo, I like the composition with the typical temple roof in the background.
A small thing to remove in the very top left corner.
abmdsudi (57728) 2012-06-27 10:07
Interesting to note here that, the roof of this wat has the similarity in design to wats in Laos. This brilliant structure has attracted the eyes from miles away for sure and the Burmese lion helps to hold the focus in. The golden light hour is another aspect worth mentioning, the quality of side lighting is so superb, an equally essential contributor in lifting this image. The compo and pov is impressive as the lion looks so commanding as strong anchor to really pulls the eyes into the whole image. This looks so serene, a nice image and a seamless result. Well done, Congrats
