Photographer’s Note

In the north of Thailand almost all the tribes cultivate opium. In this village one did not make only cultivate it... It is starting from the resin of Papaver somniferum, one of the 250 listed species of poppy, which one produces opium. To be cultivated in commercial quantity the plant requires climatic and geographical conditions quite precise: preferring a dry climate it adapts well to high altitudes (1 000 with 2200m). When the petals fall, one slices the thimble with seed to extract the resin from it, of a color milky white. While drying it takes the shape of a brown elastic paste which can be preserved years.
