Photographer's Note

This little girl is from the Palaung hill-tribe and is sleeping during the rest period at the pre-kindergarten school in Ban NorLae. Ban NorLae is a village of the palaung people who fled Burma over thirty years ago and settled in the border region of Thailand, mainly in the Fang area. Here they are on Doi Angkang which is the third highest mountain in Thailand, and the village is right upon the Thai/Burma border with the actual border running along the main road through the village. The village lies right opon the mountain ridge-line so is exposed to winds from all directions. In the North of Thailand it is customary for school kids to wear their traditional dress on Fridays to school so these kids wear their Palaung costumes.
