One in a series of pictures taken on a boat trip on the Mekong River in Northern Thailand.
This area where the borders of Thailand, Laos and Burma meet is known as the Golden Triangle. Once infamous as a centre of opium smuggling it is now sold in Thailand as a tourist attraction. The article on the Golden Triangle in Wikipedea (click here for more information) seems to suggest that the opium trade continues in one form or another though much less overtly.

That is a beautiful statue, and an impressively big one too. It looks from your shot like the boat itself is quite huge too!! This makes a very impressive scene.
All the best

Bonjour Stephen ,

Stephen, this is a pretty amusing shot. I'd love to know more about what is going on here. Pretty colors, though the greens look a little washed out. I have really enjoyed this series of river photos, concentrating on daily life on the river, more or less. Thanks.

Ciao e buona giornata

I haven't seen this from the water but I have seen it from the road. We took an evening stroll from our hotel and saw this lit up like a funfair, quite incredible! It's great to see it from this POV and in its entirety. TFS this one Stephen, a nicely presented and strange site indeed! Have a good evening Rosemary

I know the spot far too well, that is the Golden Triangle and only steps away from that boat temple structure I slipped and broke my left wrist on 7.2.2013. I will never forget the spot. Nice POV and good light management. Well done

unusual gold Buddha on the boat. Good captured theme and shot. Another interesting report from Thailand. Photo I like.
Have a nice WE.

Good to get a current update of this area which I last visited in 1998. The big outdoor buddha atop the stylised boat is new. Well framed and composed with the river level well below the centre line with good sharpness, saturation and color, The warm cold color contrast between the gold and blue is excellent. Tfs!

Ciao Stephen, fantastic statue on amazing boat, wonderful colors, excellent clarity and splendid light, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

your composition has great depth and a subtle but very effective perspective. The golden buddha makes an irresistible focal point in the middle of the upper part of the frame. I like very much the clear rendering of colours and textures that provides a very agreeable variety and makes the attractive statue stand out even more. There are even some yellow reflections on the water. A fine picture, congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely weekend,

In Thailand and even more in Burma you see the Buddha statues everywhere so why not on the boat? You were not lucky with the weather here. Interesting place.
From your note IO understand that you went with a boat on Mekong near Golden tria ngle. Several years ago I went from there to Luang prabang by longboat. It was experience! But that time I had no digital camera :(.
ikeharel (62879) 2013-05-26 8:53
Inspite of the mist prevailed, you managed a fairly good pic. over the big budha on the colorful boat, Stephen.
Water has some muddy texture, and known to drain soil-erosion on large area.
Interesting and intriguing view presented.

Oh I'm sure the Opium trade is still a high commodity!
Drugs just don't disappear, and people will always need their 'fix'
as for the photo, i have to say that the title is what caught my attention right away...love that...Buddha in a Boat!
the atmosphere is exactly how i remember it when I was there many years ago...brown water, and a hazy sky!
I like it very much, especially as its taken from the water level.
have a great weekend
