I saw this novice monk with the lotus in hand. I though it was a very appealing scene. Not only did it appear aesthetically beautiful but it's something that tellls a story....of faith, devotion, beauty.
My 70-200 lens captured a very soft shot except for the focused object. I had it at a very shallow DOF...it was a blessing in disguise. This is probably one of my all-time favorite shots.

Yes a fine compo!! with that extra shallow DOF only flowers in Focus... he is holding them behind his back... it gives a real good feeling as if he is shy to present them yet!! framing is excellent too!

Interesting well shot photo. I like the message the photo conveys. I generally prefer photos with faces since that shows the emotions of the subject but this photo tells it's story very effectively.
It is too tall for my computer screen to see all at once but this photo would look good printed and on a wall.

Excellent photo Manny, it's not often that I see one of your photos and think, how has this got so few points, but this is one of them. The contrast in the colours is great and as you say in your note, the story that is implied is very strong.
Thanks for sharing this one.

Hola Manuel, Impresionante la calidad de esta foto, es un detalle muy bien logrado de un torso poco frecuente y con un simboñlismo extraordinario, me encanta la pose y los colores, el foco perfecto de tu ojo y la frescura del loto sin abrir.Muchos saludos, Rafael

What a shot, Manuel,
Great crop, and get control over dof.
kinginexile (2598) 2006-05-25 11:03
Beautiful, manny. I like how the hand and buds seem detached from the image of the monk itself, which conveys even better the strentgh of the symbolism. It also reminds me of a famous drawing of Picasso, where a hand clasped a flower bunch. You reached into the seminal here, and i am glad to see this is one of your favorite shots. Simplicity pays great dividends again, here.

J'adore l'idée de ce cadrage serré.
Le focus bien posé et un ensemble brun-ocre qui donne don effet et puis ces fleurs de couleurs qui donnent un peu de vie.

es, I agree Manny, a truly original and authentic shot. It is a once-in-a-lifetime perfect shot.Regards Kevin

A very good post, Manuel! The pose of the hidden-behind-the-back Lotus, a secret offering, with good use of shallow DOF and color contrast to isolate the Beautiful and tender Lotus from the brown garment that mingle with the monk's skin color. Very warm and human indeed! Nothing like a top notch glass to deliver a great impact moment!
quantabeh (5205) 2006-05-25 16:43
a really superb shot! the pov is really fantastically done! an I love the colors and the exposure.
lasscor (7640) 2006-05-25 17:44
I like much the focus on this hand and these lotus in the back of this novice monk.
The color of the skin and the monk dress gives a good background to your composition.

Lovely shot with great colours.
Though, I'd like to see the flowers placed a bit more off centre, maybe if you shot the whole scene a bit higher for the flowers to appear at the bottom of the frame?
Also, what is that greenish-white flower he holds together with lotus - is that kind of a lotus too? (looks a bit like pak-choi to me).

That's a very lovely shot. Very uniquely and artistical captured.
I understand there's a few photographers would love to use such 70-200 lense for portraits. You are one of them.
And after seeing your shot, probably I would get one for myself.
Cheers and good day, Manny.

Hi Manny. I just spotted this one by chance and feel compelled to say just how much I enjoyed it. You certainly have the eye, that makes all the difference between a good picture and a very special one.
