This little girl was helping with her father's "Pah Tahn Koh" stand in Sangkhlaburi's morning market. It was actually New Year's Day and she was doing most of the work herself as her father was nursing a bad hangover. And she was doing a stand-up job, too.
Pah tahn koh (sp?) is, basically, fried dough. They are also called Chinese donuts, and are usually gobbled down in the mornings with a cup or two of sweet coffe, Nescafe (for those with more discerning tastes), or tea. Some vendors will make round versions of the donut that are sweeter than the typically elongate and unsweetened types.
Light was bad. It was foggy, there were only overhead fluorescent lamps. I wanted to capture her motion with the chopsticks, but lost some focus and overexposed the pah tahn koh. I do like the pots on burners behind her, as well as the partially burnt cheroot below her elbow (it was her father's, hot hers). And that far out top!!! A very cool little kid, to be sure! |
