Taken along the roadway into Wat Tumongkong, a small cave temple complex on the west side of the River Kwai, across from Kanchanaburi town, this corn farmer was hoeing out weeds from his crop. Most of the corn in Thailand is produced for export to cattle-raising countries, for oil, seed, and for human consumption, of course. Fresh, young, baby corn is one of those special ingredients in Thai food that has no substitute.
The town of Kanchanaburi is becoming a bit of a "scene" except for in and around the older areas, however the countryside across the river remains serene and more-or-less unchanged or unaffected by tourism or any other industries aside from agriculture. It is a fantastic area for cycling with great scenery and very little traffic.
It was midday when this photo was taken, it was hot and humid, the sky was washed out and the light not particularly good. I've cropped out the sky and the top of the huge limestone outcropping in the background, and brought up the saturation for green to about +5. |
