This is picture from Graduation Day at the Buddhist University, last Sunday. Graduation Day in Thailand is a big day. Usually the roads around the university are blocked with expensive cars. But not at our university, the roads are blocked with pick-up trucks, tuk tuks and country busses as the families of the poor come to town.

It has long been a tradition in Thailand that poor kids can enter the Sangha (the Buddhist Church) to get a free education. This is perfectly understood and accepted by both parties. Higher education is not free in Thailand and normally only the rich can afford it. These young monks will be the first in their communities ever to graduate from university. It marks the end of a long road of hardship and struggle for them and their families. Most of the will leave the monkhood over the next few months, to become teachers, officer workers or other professional, but a few will stay on to become the clergy, of the future.

The Buddhist University is a state university, like any other, and awards degrees at B.A M.A and PhD levels, in Religion, Philosophy, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences. Graduation marks a great leap forward, for kids coming for the rural poor.
In this picture the graduates are processing to meet the Supreme Patriarch and have the official photograph taken. They march through the admiring ranks of their relative and fellow villagers, most of whom have traveled long to participate in this great day.

Hello.
I really like this picture for composition (although I would maybe try slighlty lower POV to exclude as much of the surrounding crowd as possible) and for content, esp. for that "being inside"
What I don't like though is light - it's too flat for me, too dull - for me it subtracts a little bit from this shot :(

What a great photo, Kevin. You have all their attention, and what attention. All these smiles, you are so lucky to live in Thailand, your shots force this upon us, while your notes say not only you care about its people, but they touch you deeply in so many ways.

they look like orange clones ;) I like the different expressions they have, and som are even curious and pull their neck to see zhat you are doing. funny shot, zith nice colors and good dof.

Well done.

bonjour Kevin,
jolie perspective, cette ensemble en orange avec cette petite touche de bleu, fait un très beau cliché. Trés bon commentaire, merci pour ce voyage.
Martine

The lines of orange clad monks look good in this photo - well composed with good DOF. The note is excellent - really explains the significance of the event.

Hi Kevin,
nice to see all these smiling faces.
Good compo, seems to be infinite lines of monks.
Well done !

Hi Kevin,
A very touching picture. The looks on their faces tell all the hardship that they went through to be part of this happy day. The look of humility and peace that is so much part of a buddhist monk is shown nicely in this shot. It almost looks like these monks lined up for the shot...:)
Nicely taken

I love the Monk's faces, they glow! I love the smiles. The few unsmiley ones are interesting also! What is their problem today!
