A mon retour du Myanmar vers Paris, je me suis arrêté quelques jours à Bangkok.
Une mégalopole à laquelle j'ai trouvé fort peu de charme, à part bien sûr les sites historiques du centre de la vieille ville (Wat Pho, Wat Phra Kaeo, Wat Arun ….) et un peu en dehors des sentiers battus, la maison de Jim Thomson.

Jim Thompson a une histoire assez rocambolesque. Il arriva à Bangkok en 1944 en tant qu'officier des services de renseignements de l'OSS, ancêtre de la CIA. Quand il quitta l'armée, il décida de revenir en Thaïlande et d'y résider en permanence.
Jim Thompson se passionna pour la soie tissée à la main au point de se consacrer à la renaissance de cet artisanat tombé dans l'oubli. Dessinateur et coloriste de talent, sa participation fut fondamentale au renouveau du tissage de la soie thaïlandaise et à la réputation qu'elle acquit.
Il disparut mystérieusement en 1967 lors d'un voyage chez des amis en Malaysie sans laisser la moindre trace
La visite de sa maison en teck dans le pur style thaï et richement décorée d'une superbe collection d'art asiatique, vaut vraiment le détour lorsqu'on est à Bangkok

Jim Thompson had a rather fantastic life. He arrived in 1944 in Bangkok as an officer of the OSS secret services, ancestor of the CIA. When he resigned from army, he decided to come back to Thailand and make there his permanent residence
He became passionately fond of hand crafted silk, to the point of dedicating the rest of his life to the renewal of this handicraft, more or less fallen into oblivion. His involvement counts a lot in the reputation that this artistic activity has now acquired throughout the whole world
He mysteriously disappeared in Malaysia, in 1967 during a visit to some friends, without leaving any tracks of himself
The visit of his house in teak in pure thai style and decorated with a fabulous collection of asiatic arts, is definitely a must when in Bangkok
