Photographer’s Note

As I have already said in previous posts this Bang Pa In palace complex, King Chulalongkorn had a fascination with architecture and progressively added examples from the west to compliment Thai and Chinese building that were first constructed in the complex. Here is one of a number of bridges that would not look out of place in southern Europe.

The Palace is near the old capitol of Ayutthaya about 60km north of Bangkok. Although royal residencies from the island are known from at least the 1632, the present-day royal palace dates from the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1868-1910), when most of the buildings standing today were constructed between 1872-1889. The building styles within the palace compound reflect the King’s interest in architecture with European, Chines and Thai styles all being represented.

Today the palace is used occasionally by Their Majesties King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) and Queen Sirikit as a residence and for holding receptions and banquets.
