Photographer’s Note
went to a talent/beauty contest for kids last weekend in a shopping mall... i'm not a big fan of such events but this one was rather harmless, not nearly as competitive as their western counterparts.. all the kids got some presents or trophies... was actually quite fun..
you can see another shot of her here
(testing a theory ;-)..)

Lovely shot, Mark with that characteristic "cheekiness" in the compo... Light control is magnificent as is the POV to tell the story.
Not a damn thing wrong with yr 30D by the way - these days with dropping prices incredible value - the 40D adding to it is all.
Really nice work, ark.
Cheers,
Francis

Hi Mark,
Very joyful ambience on this one. Colours, lights. Her impression and placement on the table. Good title too.

Hello Mark,
Neither am a huge fan of such fun but this shot shows a different kind of pageant, thankfully not the barbie-type. The girl is adorable, but that's beside the point. What I love here is the contrast of light and dark, her uninhibited gesture, that typical V that Asian young people always do for photos, and the superb pov. A great catch!

This hasn't received much attention, but it is a good photo I think. The lighting here is really good, you have taken good advantage of directional light to really highlight the kid. I also like how the assistant is right there to lead the little kid. I kind of wish you had framed so that her back was at the left edge of the frame. I have to admit, I probably like this shot more than many simply because this seems so normal here. Not your best every, but a solid shot Mark.

Hi Mark,
Well, I have to say that the technical side of this image is quite good. You managed to get the shot without flash and at a high ISO without a lot of noise. Composition wise, this photo is, IMO, wanting. To me, it should be fairly obvious almost immediately what the photographer wants to show us (unless it is abstract). Yet the moment I looked at this photo, I almost passed it over because I really wasn't sure what it was supposed to be. It seems to me that you could have simply changed your position slightly to capture mostly the girl with the trophies, for example, and made a less confusing image. Further, I think the woman on the left is a major distraction, not a compliment. Hope I am not being too harsh. Cheers, Paul.

Interesting and totally alien to me - the shot however is great, with the spots on the little girl who seems so intent in her action...

Hi Mark,
I find this scene documented nicely. The first look, you don't know what is going on. Thanks to your note, everything comes together and it's a cute thing here not like the nut bags here in the US who push their kids into beauty contests. I love how the spot light falls right on her. Good shot that should be getting more reviews.

It's one of the first I noticed, the day I was browsing the Internet, in Nairobi airport although I haven't commented it yet.
Typically the shot I love, character in full action with rich general surroundings and a wonderful use of lighting.
Cannot be more informative, although I had hard times understanding the foreground winning trophies. I thought they were draught beer apparatus aligned on a bar at first ("beer a winner"?), I wish there was a hint of light on them...

Hi Mark.
You use the lens in a very good way and you show us a very fun scene.
The light is good too and you show us a great atmosphere.
Well done.
