Photographer’s Note
At various auspicious religious festivals in Taiwan, spirit possesion takes place. Basically, people go into a trance state and beat themselves with a variety of weapons until blood flows. These people are known as ji-tong They are, more or less, the "shock troops of religion". Normally, they beat themselves on the back or chest. It is relatively rare to see someone who has beat himself in the head.
