There is a small village on the southern coast of Sri Lanka called Weligamma. It is a lovely place where local fisherman have adopted an almost unique way of fishing. As you approach Weligama along the coast road east from Galle you will encounter Sri Lanka’s famous stilt fishermen. Each fisherman has a long pole with a crossbar that is stuck in the seabed close to the shore. The fishermen wade or swim out to these poles at times when the sea and fish are running in the right direction. They then perch on the crossbar, cast out their lines, and wait patiently for a nibble. The origin of this unusual fishing technique is unknown, but it is so successful that each stilt position is highly prized and handed down from father to son. However I think that nowadays they earn more from the tourists than the fish !!

Timing of my visit to this place was not the best due to the distance from the hotel. I got there around noon, not an ideal time as the light was very strong. It was even brighter by the reflection from the white surf. Getting detail in the faces of the fishermen when taking close ups was extremely difficult, therefore I have decided to convert this shot to B/W and give it high key treatment.

I’m slowly migrating to Flickr, if you wish to see more of my work visit my Flickr account.

Hi Lucie
It's a brilliant post-shot editing. The background is deliberately overexposed (with only slight hint of the area) to get the right exposure of the old man. The result is stunning. The old man gains strong contrast, making him a vivid sole main object of the image. I like his expression. Looking away; waiting for his catch; acting as if he wasn't aware of the tourist taking this picture.
Well done.
Toby

Hi Lucie,
this is a timeles photo - it could have been made just as well during a 19th century expedition. It is documentary, and even though the circumstances seem to have been very difficult, the face and details of the fisherman are very well visible. Beautiful!
Regards, Johannes

Hello Lucie,

Il s'agit presque ici d'une bichromie ! La surexposition est poussé à l'extrème afin d'obtenir un effet très particulier ! Cela isole parfaitement le sujet et permet de capter l'attention de l'observateur !
Bravo !

Fantastic shot Lucie! The pose and expression of the man is really good, interesting and different. The way the background is blown out really allows us to concentrate totally on him with no distractions. Very graphic.
