No, I didn't go to Sri Lanka and yes, I am aware I am posting this in Trekearth. I want to post a different picture of Sri Lankan, something hopeful, something positive.
Santosh is one of the many Sri Lankan expats here in Thailand. He is one of the students in our school (and a student in my class). The day I took this, he was playing with the hood of his shirt while I was discussing about Erikson's "search for identity vs.role confusion". Then it struck me. Santosh is one of the lucky Sri Lankans. Santosh, having spent more than half of his life in Thailand probably has a more difficult task identifying his cultural identity. But he is very confident about himself. He has a very positive energy and he has a lot of friends inside and outside of the class.
I hope I can say the same about Sri Lanka. Three months after the tsunami, little has been heard of the current reconstruction (or maybe I am wrong). I hope the light in Santosh's eyes is shared by most of the people in Sri Lanka.
Happy Easter everyone.
(Technicals: shallow DOF 2.8 was a choice. I had one with both eyes clear bt it lacks the drama.)

Wonderful portrait Manny.
I love it.
Focus in his nose, but it doesn't matter!
ChrisJ (94392) 2005-03-26 5:37
Superb portraiture, with the tight crop isolating & emphasizing detail. Wonderful sharpness, especially around the eyes. Well done!

A beautiful portrait Manny - portrait master of TE! Thankyou for sharing the concerns I guess we all feel for Sri Lanka and other countries affected by the events of Boxing Day.

Nice picture! I like the face with the calm expression. Great eyes. He has something of MonaLisa. Great shot.
B.t.w. Great that you talk about Erikson's theories. I'm a member of the German Milton Erikson Foundation.

One of the best portraits I have seen in TE, so far : Faming and sharpness excellent but so is the sad look with her eyes that tell a life of troubles.
puciu (498) 2005-03-26 6:58

Beautiful portrait. Interesting note. Happy Easter to You, too.
naxius (16685) 2005-03-26 7:22
Thank to the shallow dof set to 2.8,; this portrait is really good. I like that there is only one eye been in the focus.
scalerman (26900) 2005-03-26 7:59
a beautiful portrait Manny, and an accompanying note that reads more like a novel. nice.
nwoehnl (122) 2005-03-26 8:05
Good work on the framing and cropping for this impressive portrait, Manny. A very strong impact rendered by the glow in the eyes, and the way in which the light accentuates the details of the facial skin. Happy Easter to you, too.
Galeota (10338) 2005-03-26 9:18
Beautifully composed. YOu have a very aesthetic eye, but I guess that's not new for you.
avigur_11 (22069) 2005-03-26 9:36
What an amazing portrait, Manny. So close, so sharp, so detailed. And those deep black eyes..Great!
hugolef (4909) 2005-03-26 9:39
A great portrait Manny
i like the clothe framing his face, and contrasting the skin's color ... What a glance ... a self-portrait too ... we can see you in his eyes ...
Great capture !
emanuela (1257) 2005-03-26 9:59
great capture, nicely framed, excellent light on his mouth and in his eyes
beautiful striking portrait
Paker (2650) 2005-03-26 12:35
Very tight composition that forces us to concentrate on the eye.. and unfortunately his right eye is sharper than his left. I understand that shot taken so close to the subject is not easy, and I exprience this problem too. I believe in portrait eyes sharpness is mandatory as this is where the focus is.
otherwise it would be perfect.
jrzufferey (7301) 2005-03-26 13:36
Magnifique portrait que tu as réalisé. Je trouve la composition bien vue. Amicalement/jr

Hi Manuel, I like this very sharp portrait. The character of this figrue is clearly shown in the photo.
IMO, since this photo is taken in Thailand, although the character is from Sri Lanka, the origination of this photo should be in Thailand.
Happy Easter to you.
bip-bip (1837) 2005-03-26 16:50
This is a very powerful portrait
Your tight composition works very well
Janice (4403) 2005-03-26 21:35
Super portrait of this young man Manny. Your gift of capturing the best is amazing. Very well done...
We do hear (in NZ) of work that is being done in some of those damaged areas, but some places still have not been helped much. And some areas the govts of that land have refused help too.
sandip (3492) 2005-03-27 0:21

cmartos (242) 2005-03-27 5:45
A really beautiful portrait Manny, this one is outstanding. We can see your reflection in his eye, I would have cloned it, but anyway a superb catch, I fully agree with your choice of shallow DoF. Happy Easter.
alford (3961) 2005-03-27 6:20
Happy Easter, too, Manny! You're a very good writer and photographer - a perfect combination! Your notes are very touching. I like his eyes, and I think your reflection is captured in his eyes. This is definitely one of your photos with not much colors, but it turned out very good! rgds.
Praetzer (1662) 2005-03-27 9:42
EXcellent portrait. Like the DOF with only the left eye sharp.
carper (96) 2005-03-27 12:15
It's a fantastic portrait Manuel,
very good composing shot and the details are super, those eyes are asking eyes, fantastic phot. with compliments.
avis2avis (4264) 2005-03-27 23:49
I will agree with your choice of shallow dof. and you have controlled it so well. I really like he colors here or rather the lack of it. Class apart!
Mafo (1339) 2005-03-28 1:30
Nice clear portrait, Manuel!
Wonderful sharpnes, perfectli croped, with a story in his eyes!
Kenny10pin (19301) 2005-03-28 9:34
great focus and the dof is brilliant, his whites in the eyes seems a little PS ed a bit too much
verge (1241) 2005-03-28 9:37

Philappy (157) 2005-03-28 10:57
Quel magnifique portrait, un des plus beau vu sur TE.
Le regard est envoutant presque "animal" et pourtant l'expression générale est très douce.
AnimeshRay (9083) 2005-03-28 15:42
Excellent portrait! Careful framing. His confident eyes are beautiful and striking.
Fixfocus (9385) 2005-03-29 5:25
One of the most intensive portraits I´ve seen on TE,Manny!I like the strong and clear compo very much! The monochrome color is supporting the composition.
Curioso (9271) 2005-03-31 17:44
Wooooo ! Impressive. I love the DOF, the crop, everything as usual but this one is one step above your usual picture. I love it ! I wish I could do that...
faubry (35401) 2005-04-08 10:44
very wonderful portrait!! his regard is too expressif! and deep, i think like you what it's hope in his hearth and all SRI Lnakas people, i was two weeks ago in India with humanitair mission after tsunami, and i have seen more dignity in there expression of life
ballyna (1689) 2005-04-22 18:49
excellent portrait but I would love to understand if it's a boy or a girl;I can't decide any one of it :-) that doesn't change anything of course, very successfull .
dsidwell (9771) 2005-05-05 2:27
It is impossible not to click on this photo, Manny! The expression is so engaging. Once more, your perfect tones really add depth and life to your faces.
davide7755 (4) 2005-06-06 10:06
One eye is not good focused
The composition is very very good.
I prefer two eyes on focus !!! ^_^
sorry for my english... ^_^ good work...
coco (30437) 2005-06-08 18:55
WONDERFUL. Even is possible see the photographer (you) in his eyes.
But his eyes... what eyes, what face... is much than interesting... is... just only see the photo and you will understand me.
Thanks for share.
hajle (1087) 2005-12-20 17:04
another one great portrait!
the best POV and DoF!!
andante (7092) 2006-01-02 17:15
Manuel, what a big surprise to run into your work here, and to be able to see more of your work. The fact that you decided to use a shallow DOF gives this image an additional drama about the subject. Once again I take my hat off...
anew (582) 2006-03-25 10:30
Wow what a face, Sri Lankan or otherwise. I love it.
clarita (654) 2006-03-25 10:57
