Photographer’s Note

This temple, constructed in 17th century, houses a relic of Buddha, a tooth, which is venerated by Buddhists. The tooth is said to be snatched from his funeral pyre in 543 BC, and smuggled to Sri Lanka in the hair of a princess in the 4th century AD.

The temple was damaged by the Tamil separatists' suicide truck-bomb attack in 1998, but has been repaired soon afterward.
