Photographer's Note

schoolchildren on the train in Colombo's Fort Station

---

Colombo is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka. It is a busy and vibrant city with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings and a population of about 650,000. Some 40% of them are Sinhalese, Tamils and Moors make up about 20% each.

---

Fort, between Colombo Harbour to the north and Beira Lake to the south, is the commercial, financial and political heart of Colombo.

The Portuguese built and extended the original colonial fortress here during more than a century of conquest and resistance. Later it was taken over by the Dutch, and finally demolished by the British after they completed their conquest of the country in the mid-19th century.

Today, the area is the city's financial and commercial heart and houses Colombo's main international hotels, as well as Sri Lanka's seat of government.

Since the international airport is quite far from the capital, many tourists in Sri Lanka tend to skip visiting Colombo.

We found it very rewarding, though. Neighbourhoods like Pettah and Fort are great to wander around in, there are a handful of OK museums and what better way to wrap up the day than to go sunsetting on Galle Face Green?
