Photographer's Note

just a slice of daily life in Pettah...

---

Colombo is the largest city and commercial capital of Sri Lanka. It is a busy and vibrant city with a mixture of modern life and colonial buildings and a population of about 650,000. Some 40% of them are Sinhalese, Tamils and Moors make up about 20% each.

---

Pettah is a lively neighborhood in central Colombo and is famous for its open air bazaars and markets. Notable landmarks in the neighborhood include the Jami-ul- Alfar Mosque and the Khan Clock Tower.

Moors are the predominant ethnic group found within this multi-religious and multi-ethnic area. Besides large Sinhalese and Tamil populations, there are various other minorities such as Burghers, Malays and others.

The main mode of motorized transportation here is the tuktuk.

---

Since the international airport is quite far from the capital, many tourists in Sri Lanka tend to skip visiting Colombo. We found our visit very rewarding, though. Neighbourhoods like Pettah are great to wander around in, there are a handful of OK museums and what better way to wrap up the day than to go sunsetting on Galle Face Green?
