Photographer's Note

Two survivors from the Dec. 26, 2004 tsunami. This young girl lost her 22 years old father in the catastrophy and is now being brought up by his older brother. The two of them plus the mother of the child and the grandfather are now living in a temporary shelter and though the child sometimes cry and asks for her father hope and happiness is slowly coming back to her eyes.

The train is the background is the “Samudra Devi” or “Queen of the Sea”. On the day of the tsunami the train was on it's way from the capital Colombo to Matara. After the first wave had hit survivors where running for shelter inside the train. The other gigantic wave hit the train in Telwatta near Hikkaduwa and threw all nine carriages more than one hundred meters away. At least 95% of the 2.000 passengers didn't survive. This is the worst train disaster the world has ever seen and survivors are talking about a "wall of water" that hit the train. The carriages that you see is now due to become a monument and it's now called "The train of death".
