They say an elephant never forgets. I wonder if this one will always remember me sticking a camera in his face. He didn't seem to mind though.

This is another picture from the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage. I tipped one of the mahouts a dollar and he escorted me into the herd of elephants so I could get closer to them. Most people just keep to the path.

Wow, Jonathan, An impressive close up look at the elephant. I am surprised that you can be so close to the elephants to take a picture like that. A nice shot with sharpness, clarity, and depth.

Hi Jon
I definitely admire your courage in exploring this rather bizzare composition in which you have managed to capture the details of the face relatively well.
I call it bizzare because usually people tend to compose the photo by including all of the elephant's nose but you are exploring the limits over here and that is what I like about it.
Despite the fact that I do like the cropped nose of the main elepphant, I would have still liked to see some ground undereath the elephants in the background .. but than these are just my preferences I guess.
The light is definitely very dramatic

Bonsoir Jonathan

Bien vu !

Hi Jonathan,
Very good portrait of this elephant. I'm sure 'he' remembers you so close!
Superb sharpness and colors, showing us so many nice details on its head. I love the veins on the hears and the dirty top of the hairy head. Very good original composition, cutting the nose but giving us the sight of the herd and trees in the back. I like the detail of some branches coming out of its head, as if it was part of the hair.
Hope to see some more of these 'guys'. I do paintings on my free time (before I joined TE, though) and my theme used to be animals and I have some close-ups of elephants...
Have a good weekend,
Ricardo

Hi Jonathan,
Yes, that's the difference between an average photographer and one who takes risks and goes the extra mile which often results in better photos.
I like the composition here and the light is captured nicely. Good job!

Hi Jonathan. Cool shot, I think it would better without the other people, but that's ok... lovely blue sky with nice green trees, I especially like the detail of the elephant and the hairs on his head. Nice job.

Great close up of the elephants! I like the way you filled the frame with this guy, which I think gives him more of a sense of personality. The background view of the other elephants and the trees beyond complete the scene by giving some sense of the setting. Great work Jonathan!

Great composition! Very sharp -- elephant hairs are clearly sticking out.

THanks for sharing.

Hi Jonathan,
it's an elephant macro ! ;-)
Well done, unusual and very sharp.
Great light and colors !

It is believed that people with a depression in their foreheads like that of an elephant have good memory.

Jonathan
A great piece of composition and a good tight shot. The elephant in the foreground gives a sense of scale and shows how dominant these animals are. The lighting seems a bit warmer than your previous post and the shadows add some good depth. Nice shot.

Hello Jonathan,

Hello Jonathan,
Another impressive documentary image from you! The close-up on the elephant is excellent! Sharpness, colors and DoF are all well managed. Congratz!

I think that cutting the trunk(s) was not the best idea.
Now the elephant(s) look(s) somehow lame...

Hi Jonathan, nice close-up! I like the off-center subject, with other elephants showing smaller on the other side. It's just a pity that the eye is in shadow.

Thanks for sharing!

Erin

Hello again Jonathan,

Interesting portrait of an interesting creature. I like the detail you've captured. I allso like the friendly look in the eye of the elephant, like he's curious about your camera and yet just happy to get some attention from a human. Nicely captured. TFS.
