Photographer's Note

A misty morning in Hakgala Gardens did not spoil the enjoyment of the visit. Situated beneath the towering Hakgala Rock some 10km south of Nuwara Eliya (Little England) with majestic views across hills receding in tiers into the distance, the damp morning brought a special atmosphere to the location.

The garden was established in 1861 for experimental cultivation of Cinchona (Quinine), a commercial crop thriving at the time. Later, it was turned into an experimental tea cultivation centre and in 1884 it was transformed into a garden. Since then many sub- tropical and some temperate plants have been planted in the gardens.
