Photographer's Note

The city of Dambulla is situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka, situated 148 km north-east of Colombo. It is famous for the largest and best preserved cave temple complex of Sri Lanka.

Dambulla cave temple is the largest and best preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. The rock towers 160 m over the surrounding plains. Major attractions are spread over 5 caves, which contain statues and paintings. These paintings and statues are related to Lord Buddha and his life. There are a total of 153 Buddha statues here.

This giant Golden Buddha statue stands at the entrace of the cave temple complex and casts a benevolent eye on the visitors. Unfortunately, while its simple to get to this point, after this its a bit of a climb - not very comfortable on a hot day - to get to the cave temples themselves. And mind you, don't wear shorts...your knees need to be covered when you enter the complex!
