Photographer’s Note
The Island of Sri Lanka is almost hidden in the shadow if India and since long perturbed by political difficulties, and now also since last year recovering from a nature disaster; but this country truly is such a precious treasure that I decided to post a few Sri Lanka images this week for obvious reasons.
These ladies are walking home along the beach of Negombo carrying wood that will be used for cooking diner.
While the waves break on the beach and the wind blows hard, they walk along with rhythmic and sure steps in the tropical afternoon heat.
Their feet even barely seem to touch the fine and soft white sand as they move ahead, carrying the weight of walking wood.
I post a B/W version of this image in a WS, since the colours on the original are not very bright. I thought a B/W might work better?

Hoi Sabine,
I don't agree with your choise for B&W in the ws. I like the colour of the sand and of the skirts of these 2 women. The only thing that I see is a bit of noise in the air. Maybe your diafragma was to big? I surely think Sri Lanka is a precious Island. CU, Erik

Dag Sabine,

Hi Sabine,
No doubt - I prefer the colour-version. Even though it's not the most colourful image (they don't all have to be) you still have the colour of the sand and the womens dresses and I think that adds a lot to the image. The powerful waves also adds a lot to the image and so does the fact that the two momen are walking in step.
Good shot.
:) Tina

Bien pris
Bonne soirée

How, I didn't know you've been to Sri Lanka? You have been to all these places I want to go to... I am so jealous!! I like this image, the women walking with all that wood!! If only there was a water taxi to take them home!! I like this more than the photo you posted before.

Great daily life photo here, and I like the positioning of the women which seem to stand out really well from the background of the ocean.

Allo Sabine,

Hi Sabine, this is a wonderful picture of daily life. It's a beautiful composition with the backdrop of the ocean. The tide line meets the corner of the frame perfectly.

Salt Sabine,
Bravo.

Apart from the noise, this is an excellent photograph, Sabine, and the colour version is definitely the best one because the sand merges with the water too much in the B&W version. In any event, I like the soft colours you have captured here. Framing and DOF are very good too. Cheers . . . David

Ciao Sabine,
I was strolling thru your gallery reading your notes and watching your nice images.
In this one I like how you balanced the subjects in your framing, their walk and the white waves as background.
In my opinion the soft tones of the colours works very well to make me choose the colour version.
I think I will post some images of Sri Lanka too...
A smile

Hi again Sabine
In fact i prefer this one! The two women walking on the same step, and the grain causes a truly enjoyable efect.
Just that.
I agree with you: is a precious island!

This is great subject matter, nicely composed.
The shadows are plugged (lack of detail) and the quarter tones are muddy (lacking contrast, color).
Photographer and reviewers noted image color rendered dull. Original image has better color than appears when image is rendered on TE. (See my workshop for corrective action.)
There is significant digital noise in the image which prevents further improvement due to the tendency of this noise to become really distracting artifacts.
