La légende du Mahabharata dit qu'un jour Parvati, d'humeur facétieuse, posa les doigts sur les yeux de Shiva ce qui eut pour conséquence de plonger l'univers dans l'obscurité et de suspendre toute vie. Shiva, furieux, envoya son épouse sur terre près de la rivière Vegavati pour y méditer sa faute. La déesse façonna un lingam avec la terre humide prise à la berge de la rivière, qu'elle vénéra à l'abri d'un manguier.

The legend of Mahabharata says that one day Parvati, of facetious humor, put her fingers on the eyes of Shiva what had consequence to plunge the universe into the darkness and to suspend any life. Shiva, furious, sent his wife on earth near the river Vegavati to meditate her fault there. The goddess shaped a lingam with the wet earth taken from the bank of the river, which she worshipped sheltered from a mango.
