Approaching the famous Cave Temple in Dambulla first you see the new Buddhist museum within the Golden Temple.
A curious enterprise, almost blatantly commercial, it is entered through an extravagantly kitsch dragon's mouth. It displays donated Buddhist statues from around the world, old ola leaf manuscripts and copies of the cave paintings. Piped Buddhist music and air-conditioning give the museum a slight impression of a religious elevator. The new Buddha can be climbed via a flight of steps leading to the new temple from behind the museum.
