Hongdae - the most popular nighttime meeting place for young people in Seoul. Dozens of clubs, hundreds of bars, a lot of alcohol, cigarettes and crazy people. A heaven for shooting at night.

This is no recommendable place for a recent father Rafal. You get to move away from these places man! :) Very freaky show here. It reminds me Maciej photos from the Cardiff night scene but with an oriental flavor. And in b&w. Compo is cool, although a bit straight to the point, but the shutter/aperture choices are super. The leftmost freak is amazing. Like it!

Hola Rafal... I was missing your photos already. This one has the quality to make you feel involve in the action. Also I get surprised by the similarity with my own place, scenes like this are visible here in Madrid, must be globalization for good or for bad... Take care.

Naturalna scenka z życia. Dynamika, ważny przekaz w B&W.
Pozdrawiam!

Fajna, dynamiczna scena, luzacki klimat.
Długonie widziałem Twoich nowych fot na TE.
Pozdrawiam, Marek.

Cool shot, Rafal, I guess you've been busy lately. This one is brsting with dynamism and that peculiar kind of street narcissism one finds in Tokyo and Seoul I guess.
Nice work,
Francis

I was really sad to hear that you would upload photos only when you feel likely so, but this also increses the tension of waiting for Jinju photos.
"A heaven for shooting at night" really. The drunken man, lying on the ground, as if fallen from the still moving swing and ready to choke in his puke, the other figure, who looks like going to share the same destiny with her friend, her blurred condition (which supports the dizziness effect imho) and the group of drinkers who look ready to plunge into individual nocturnal flights create a weird but to me so well known atmosphere.
What were you doing there Rafal?
Have you finished the daylight already?
Cheers and keep cool :)
Deniz

Hi Rafal,
I like it a lot, it looks so genuinely decadent ! Couldn't imagine that from so sophisticated Korea !
Have a nice day,
Jean-Yves

znam i lubie
podoba mi sie bardzo to zdjecie
pozdrawiam

So good to see you back, Rafal, I miss your uploads though am happy for the obvious reason for your absence. This is another aspect of Korea that you show us, something of the Seoul underground (or "ontheground"). It's slightly different from your usual posts in its gritty journalistic way, and I much welcome your stretching the "envelope" here... great bw, definite mood...
tc,
sasa

The motion blur effect on the swing contrasting to the guy laying on the floor, helps communicate the crazyness in the atmosphere of the place. Though there is a lot of light, i have the impression that it is a night shot... interesting...
Cheers,
Enrique

hello Rafal, good BW treatment. a reportage photo, good atmosphere captured
well done
francine

hey man, what's up, see you had a chance to shoot with Harvey, must have been a thrill.
Awesome shot Rafal, someone said decadent and I agree, there is something in this shot that really attracks me to it, even though it's difficult to put a finger on what exactly is it, perhaps it's the chaos evident in the photo that so well conveys the night life, the need to be free, love the background full of folks who want to be just like these two, at least for one night.

Shooting projects is great, tried it in the past but really don't have what it takes, just can't committ to anything like this for an extended period of time, putting everything else on the second plan for 6 to 12 months just isn't an option.
Peter

An interesting one Raf, a scene I'd expect in London rather than your part of the world. Theres a real thick atmosphere with night work, and thats something I look forward to from your future images.

Good stuff, Rafal - but please be careful
when going out both at this early hour and
at these places.
This could be as well anywhere in the UK,
what a pity - I'm not an old fart but often
ask myself where is this world going - is
it going towards its end or what...

Robi

Hi Rafal

I like the distortion from what appears to be a wide angled lens as it suits the edgy subject matter. Wonderful motion blur in the vacant centre swing, & a fantastic tonal range. Tfs!

Hi Rafal, wow... different subjects...and different story here...
the composition and the moment you have captured are very good..
a particular night atmosphere in this image..
i like it!
ciao!

Wonderful documentary work Rafal. The effect is wonderful. The blur is also very much effective. Overall a nice capture of the mood.

I'm not a recent father, but I would run away from these kind of places. I never know when a bottle can fall on my head...
Photographical speaking, I think it can be very dificult to focus on a scene and compose it right to have an interesting image. Although I prefer your isolation of a single human, I think you made a tremendous good work here. Great diagonal on the composition. Love the detail of the empty swing...and the guy in the back laughing at the one on the ground.

Hi,
It looks like I like your vices Rafal ;-)
I like the way the imagination kicks in with this guy on the floor a bottle (of beer) in the hand, the swing swinging. And the lads in the BG, giving an idea of the atmosphere.
A touch of Maciej here, that's all good!

Witaj Rafale,
Czego dzisiaj potrzeba ludziom, a w szczególności młodym? Luz, ucieczka od przyzwyczajeń w obowiazkach, ucieczka od hostorii, problemów globalnych itd. Ważny jest dzisiejszy dzień i ja, apotem niech bedzie co chce. Stąd festyny, festyny i jeszcze raz festyny. A może nie wszystko jest takim, jakim je postrzeganmy? Świetny kadr, dobry przekaz.
Pozdrawiam serdecznie,
Jurek

aah. This is a far cry from those squeaky clean images you once used to do so well.. You would never tell they are from the same person.

This photograph has instant appeal, despite the overexposure in the back - it doesn't matter to me, as there is so much to look at in the foreground. I think she is the definition of "cool"..

Excellent..

Great documentary shot, Rafal - raw and real. A rare insight into a city sub-culture that you've executed brilliantly. Seoul would be one of the few cities in the world where I wouldn't be nervous trying to shoot in a night-time environment like this (maybe Tokyo as well). Cheers . . . David

Hey Rafal,

Oh man, vision of youth, freedom to get high wasted! I like the modulation of movement and dynamism. The eye pays more attention to the surrounding elements, the state of what they are in. The blur and glare gives us the sense of the place...Dude want some ecstacy? Anio!

Just an advice: Be careful in taking photographs upclose with these kind, I had a bad experience with one person suddenly grabbing my camera and tried hitting me with a beer bottle - that was close.

Pozdrawiam!

We can hardly be more explicit about alcool Rafal. I missed it. A very good representation of a urban slum area.
Ciao

HellO Rafal
THis one I like very much, there is a sense of abandon, these two are oblivious to what everyone else is dong and they dont make any excuses about it.
Very well done
Regards
Daniel

Since I'm at your gallery...
Killer stuff, Rafal !!!

Thes are the photographer guts, this is the essence...
Being there is one thing
Knowing how to use that 'being there' - it's quite another.

Some maciekda influence there (?).

Great.
