This is probably one of those photos that you open when you see the thumbnail and you think “What on earth is that?” Well, I can only partly answer that question. One night when I was staying at a hotel on Haeundae Beach, just east of Busan, I looked out of the window at about midnight and there were these two men with a welding machine creating this ‘thing’ on the beach. That in itself wasn’t all that unusual because I had noted a lot of sculptures being erected on the beach during the day in preparation for an arts festival that was due to open the next day – and I guessed these guys were late in putting their sculpture up and were working through the night to get it done – but most of the sculptures were recognisable in terms of what they were supposed to represent, but this one puzzled me. So I took my camera down to the beach and I asked them what it was. They didn’t speak English, and I don’t speak Korean, so probably they couldn’t understand my question and I certainly couldn’t understand their reply, so all could do was take this photograph as they continued to work. Whatever it is, it is colourful and unusual, but I have no idea what it is supposed to represent.
I didn’t have an external flash with me, and I was surprised how well the in-camera flash illuminated the sculpture from the distance that I took this. I cropped some of the beach from the bottom of the frame (which was over-exposed from the flash), increased saturation +4 and applied an unsharp mask. I tried several attempts with the USM before I got it right – reducing the sharpening each time because it did strange things to the red uprights. In the end, the sharpening that I used was quite modest. I like the contrast of the red metal bars against the black sky over the ocean.

I like your shot. What is that? It's art, and I like it. I like the colour and the structure. It might represent some energy, like wind or fire. But that is not important.
It's a nice piece of artwork. And your shot is too.

Yes, what is it, new age sculpture, modern art...however it is well seen David, your flash gave such a great contrast beween the 3thing" and the deep dark sky and sea...

Hai David, a very nice catch of this photo. Those thingd look like fire breathing out of the earth. Those things stand out with the dark blackground.

Indeed a very curious sculpture that is well spotted with the flash isolated with the dark background.

Hello David, you predicted my response to this picture well. At first I thought that there was some movement here and that the red squiggles were light trails. It is definitely an odd sculpture and it makes for a fascinating photo.
