Rainy Sunset Photo

Photographer’s Note

Tonight I was treated with a terrific sunset and rainstorm. The shots of the rain drops didn't come out but the colors that resulted from wet reflections of an orange setting sun did come out andd I am sharing a shot that doesn't have much more story than that, the link to TE oc course is that even ugly cities can look great once in a while.

Please check out the workshop, it includes the view out the other side of my apartment.

Hi Greg,
Excellent light on this. Wet streets have good contrast. Those buildings don't show much beauty though. Anyway I prefer the WS. Good contrast between dark, hard and sharply edged built landscape and warm colours and soft forms of nature. Division of the frame is excellent. And IMO, whining about sunsets is just useless.

Great POV. The lighting created by the natural sun is good BUT i like the workshop version better. There the colours are stronger and makes the photo looks much better.

Hi Greg.
I prefer this one to the workshop, because of the better light and contrast.The fact that two buildings are blocking the view on the side is a good idea, as it keeps our eyes from wandering.
As to the city,well, it is just a city as you say, but at least, good looking at this moment.

Hi Greg,
very nice enlighted city view, the dark clouds add a lot of atmosphere and together the colours are really good in their saturation. Impressive and deep capture by the view along the street. The workshop is impressive too, but only in the brighter part, there is a bit too much dark for my perception. Some cropping or better "opening the shadow" would help.

Hi Greg,
A very busy town, but your viewpoint with great light makes this cityview very pleasant to look at. The cars look like little ants moving slowly through the streets, and the warm sunlight gives a great mood to it.

I recognize this image already showed under a different light. This version, under this rainy weather and threatening is splendid. The light is very beautiful. I like the coloured spots in the street. Very good realization.

Well, Greg, I see that you had a tough decision to make, but I think you made the right one. I just love the light that the sun is creating on these buildings, and those moody clouds are pretty incredible. Lines of traffic, light reflected on pavement - I think this has to become my first favorite on TE!

I don't know if the city is ugly but here it seems very nice: the pov, the colours, the amazing stormy sky. It worked very well here. I like the sky of the other one in the workshop, it has fantastic colours!

Wonderful lighting renders warm clear colors with beautiful variations created by the lovely shadows. The details of these monster buildings are soften by the late stormy sky and the traffic lends beautiful depth to this beauty.

I think this type of sky and city view is peculiar to Korea and that part of earth. How cloudy the sky is I can even smell the rain but it is sunny too. Ironic but pleasant to look at. such a remarkable scenery you have

you're right, Greg, good light can make even the most mundane scene look special, and this photo shows exactly that. I like a lot how the warm yellow light is surrounded by the threatening sky and shadow on the street, it definitely creates a dramatic image. I also like the composition you've chosen with the street creating a great perspective and tiny cars giving a sense of scale. excellent observation and timing.

yup, THIS is THE light... warm, setting sunlight against a stormy sky... unbeatable for the purposes of presenting citiscapes. i like this one quite a bit, but i have to note that the workshop one seems even stronger and more dramatic to me.
