Photographer’s Note
A Buddha bas relief carved onto the rock at Beopjusa Temple near Songnisan.
"Yeorae Image Seated on Stool and Carved on Rock Surface at Beopjusa"
Treasure No. 216
Location: Sanae-ri. Naesongni-myeon, Bocun-gun
Chungcheongtuk-do
This 'relievo', carved on a large rock about six meters high, is a rare statue of Buddha sitting on a chair, and together with the neighboring statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Buddhist Goddess of Hell), (at left) they explain the traits of Beopjusa Temple.
The round and gentle face, long and broad nose, round shape of the eyebrows, protuberant eyelids, tightly closed lips and long earlobes are typical of the early Goryeo Period's style of rock-carved Buddhas. The slender waist in contrast to the wide shoulders is unrealistic. The same applies to the almost flat surface of the sculpture.
On the right side of the Buddha is a sculpture in intaglio, which some people say was engraved in prehistoric times. But it is generally presumed to be related to the legend of the Buddhist Scriptures that were carried on an oxcart by the founder of the Beopjusa Temple, Buddhist Priest Euisinjosa."

Hello Chris,
I was happy to be online, when this shot rolled in. The light is ideal to bring out the details of the relief. The style carving — a body evocative of an Olympic swimmer — is indeed different than the more common depictions. I wonder if others like it exist from this period? The colors of the overhanging leaves add a dramatic highlight.
Regards and have a good weekend,
Bulent

Bonjour Chris
La sculpture de Boudha sur cette stèle est d'une grande finesse et d'une grande précision. La présence des fleurs ajoute de la couleur.
Merci pour le partage et bonne journée.

Hello Chris,
Superb capture of the Buddha carved in stone, a little light image. The composition is excellent and red leaves of the tree provide much contrast to capture. Good job.
Best wishes,

Hi Chris,
The point of view is showing with precision the details of the bas relief of Buddha. The trees are framing well the bas relief. the light is well managed and is enhancing the colors. Have a nice day.

Salut Chris
I really like this fine carving of the Buddha(the stone texture), and the way you've presented it...yes, with the leaves on top which have embellished the scenery. Colors are nicely and naturally rendered.
Amitiés
Marilyn
