A Buddha bas relief carved onto the rock at Beopjusa Temple near Songnisan.

"Yeorae Image Seated on Stool and Carved on Rock Surface at Beopjusa"

Treasure No. 216
Location: Sanae-ri. Naesongni-myeon, Bocun-gun
Chungcheongtuk-do

This 'relievo', carved on a large rock about six meters high, is a rare statue of Buddha sitting on a chair, and together with the neighboring statue of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva (Buddhist Goddess of Hell), (at left) they explain the traits of Beopjusa Temple.

The round and gentle face, long and broad nose, round shape of the eyebrows, protuberant eyelids, tightly closed lips and long earlobes are typical of the early Goryeo Period's style of rock-carved Buddhas. The slender waist in contrast to the wide shoulders is unrealistic. The same applies to the almost flat surface of the sculpture.

On the right side of the Buddha is a sculpture in intaglio, which some people say was engraved in prehistoric times. But it is generally presumed to be related to the legend of the Buddhist Scriptures that were carried on an oxcart by the founder of the Beopjusa Temple, Buddhist Priest Euisinjosa."
