Special for Steely, my very ancient Singapore hairdressers pictures. It was my first trip far away, and I travelled on my own. Spend the first few days in Singapore just to get used a bit, and trying to lay my hands on a better camera.
I felt very much at ease, and I roamed the streets, and somehow, I am attracted by hairdressers, and that's why Steely's picture of today: Who needs a haircut, reminded me of my first trip. So, special for Steely.
I like the building, but the name 'Heeren building' also drew my attention, it was the old Dutch word 'Heeren' which means 'Gentlemen'. I don't know whether it meant 'Gentlemen Building' here.
I haven't the slightest idea in which part of Singapore it was, so I just mentioned Kranji, as I had to mention something.
The pics are old and dusty, sharpened a bit, cloned out some dust, I highlighted the mirror a bit, cropped here and there to get the same size, ran NeatImage, but I didn't like that, and added a frame.

Oh wow, Rinie this is a classic shot.
The old Heeren building is part of stretch of low shophouses in Orchard Road, from old prewar days; this barber shop is a landmark of old Orchard Road to me, the other being the FitzPatrick Supermarket nearby ( FOOD -LOL!). A new building now stands in its place, A shopping centre with HMV, trendy and update shops, and lots of restaurants.
The other half is the FiveFootWay Chinese Barber(named so becos in old Singapore pre/post wwii building codes the sheltered pedestrian pavements outside of buildings are minimum 5 feet in width).
The last time I saw one of these in ChinaTown might be in the late 80s....
Wonderful Vintage pics !

Great photo. I particularly like the person's reflection in the mirror. Also the way the advertising signs have changed is interesting... nowdays everything would be air-con, but this barber shop actually says 'air-conditioned' on the outside.

Lovely! Colorful & sharp collage with loads of couleur locale. A great tribute-to photo also. This getting a nice tradition on TE. Very well done, Rinie.

Rinie u geeft hier wel een prachtig overzicht met de beide foto's, een goede uitleg met scherpe beelden, wat moet een foto nog meer hebben. Bedankt!

ah, a two in one shot, great. Well done but it is a little unfocused, btu I do like the reflection of the person in the mirror, well done

Nicely positioned. The reflection in the mirror is great. It looks like a painting on the wall of what is happening right at this moment. And the bareness of the place is interesting, too. It looks so impromptu, like some guy decided to occupy the space and do haircuts. It's quite a contrast to the photo on the left which is much more permanent and established. Good job.

The quality is good enough I think, and it's fun how you created a comicstrip... It underlines a story and describes a part of the hairdressing business.
I could tell from the adds on the wall that it was taken in the eighties... ;)

Great shot Rinie!
I know where this used to be due to the name on the building- "Heeren". There's a shopping centre on Orchard Road called The Heeren Shops- it had to be in that vacinity...
It was probably there around the time I paid my first visit to Singapore in '91 (I was about 15). I was visiting my father in Indonesia, and had come through Singapore for a few days. As I recall it they were remodeling Orchard Road at the time, widening the road, and installing planters etc.
When I first arrived in Singapore, I used to go to a Malay Barber along Orchard road. Not a bad haircut for $9 SGD ($5 USD).
I agree with Steely, great vintage pic!
