Photographer’s Note
Mandai Orchid garden is a must see spot when in Singapore. Nestled in the lushly forested quiet area of Mandai Lake Road the garden offers visitors a fine display of the myriads of orchids in open sunshine, and is a place of horticultural interest in Singapore. The 2 hectares of the Vintage Garden showcases a vast variety of orchids on an open hillside with the gradual gradient providing an ideal condition for orchid cultivation. There are over 200 varieties of orchids which are grouped into major families.
The orchid is the national flower of Singapore. From 1957 the Singapore Government has been honouring state visitors and other VIPs “to promote goodwill and foster ties between nations” by naming orchid hybrids after them. This particular one was named after Queen Elizabeth of England. Her majesty donated 5 mln pounds (at least i've been told so) to develop the Orchid gardens further. Amongst the other celebrities with named after orchids are former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Nelson Mandela, Japanese Emperor Akihito, Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and U.S. First Lady Laura Bush.
