Since I began to developed interest for photography 7 years ago, I was spontaneously attracted to people photography, particularly towards tribes, rituals, ceremonies, make-up and costumes.
Chinese Opera performers were high on my list of subjects to shoot, aside with geishas, sadhus, kathakali and theyyam. The more colourful, the better...
So it was a delight to spend time with performers from Singapore Chinese Opera and to be able to document their stunning characters.
Dedicated to the Chinese New Year of the Snake.

Beautiful natural portrait. The expression on the lady's face is great and old rich tradition visible in every detail of the photograph.

This has the look and feel of some of Takero's work as well, Andre - a beautiful closeup that shows the humanity under the costumes and makeup of a performer. Though the face is heavily obscured, we see the lines , pores and wrinkles that show a human side peeking through; the incredible adornments are really just a backdrop to your careful study of the face. Nicely done.

Hapy Chinese New Year! You celebrate very well with a photo like this and I can see why a people shot of this type would be so high on your list. What strikes me most about the portrait is just how close you;ve got to your subject. I'd be too afraid to ask to get this close. So brownie points for that. And then there's how well you've executed the shot. On the few occasions I've gotten this close, I usually rush it and stuf it up. Here, the light mamagement, focus and colour rendering are flawless. I love the tight framing and the exquisite details of her traditional costume. I also likehow she is looking away from the lens, and the light is caught so enchantingly in her eyes.
Great shot, thanks for sharing

a marvellous and captivating image in which the intricate costume and the intriguing expression comptete for the attention and fascination of the viewer. The tight framing, the well rendered sense of depth as well as the accurate capture of textures and details make our impression quite vivid. I love the management of the soft light that is reflected in the performer's eyes, has created a special atmosphere and has allowed the lighter tones to keep their luminosity and the deeper ones their mystery. Congratulations and thank you!
All the best, have a lovely week,

Beautiful portrait, quite flamboyant in decorations - as your title says, so colorful and eye-catching.
The face looks almost like a mask with all the heavy unnatural make-up, but the expression on the person's face is very pleasant and the look in the eyes is lively and curious.
Great angle for the turn of the face in this portrait!
Have a nice week and all the best!
