A view of the gopuram (entrance tower) of the Sri Mariamman Temple in Singapore.
The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple. It is an agamic temple, built in the Dravidian style. Located at 244 South Bridge Road, in the downtown Chinatown district, the temple serves mainly Hindu Singaporeans in the city-state. Due to its architectural and historical significance, the temple has been gazetted a National Monument and is a major tourist attraction. Sri Mariamman Temple is managed by the Hindu Endowments Board, a statutory board under the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.
The Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, eight years after the East India Company established a trading settlement in Singapore. Pillai was a government clerk from Penang who arrived in Singapore with Sir Stamford Raffles on his second visit to the island in May 1819. Pillai went on to set up the island's first construction company, and also entered the textile trade. He rapidly established himself in business and was identified as a leader of the Indian community.

Hi, Stephen, my neighbor today again,
I am not expert of the Hindu culture and I can see these temples only as a western man. But I like this style, attractive picturesque details. I've got some photos of the similar temples in Sri Lanka. Great presentation! TFS!

Marvelous view of the Gopuram of this beautiful Hindu temple. Love the ornate and ornate sculptures on the gopuram. As this was built by a South Indian the architecture is of South Indian style. good one thanks for sharing.

I have just spent many minutes zoomed in and admiring the details of this incredible structure. The level of detail I'm the artwork and each of these many many characters is amazing. This is a wonderful composition against the blue sky which seems to accentuate the colors even more. Really nicely done, a fascinating place to learn of.
All the best

Cette partie du temple est impressionnante. La prise de voir les détails et les couleurs de la tour. La bonne luminosité donne de belles teintes aux couleurs de l'image. Bonne soirée.

Amazing detail in this Temple Gateway, the figures are fantastic, and so many, and I am sure they have story's attached to them.
I also like nature getting into the frame the lush green banana tree's and they have fruit.

hello Stephen, Nice series of your archive shots from Singapore. Beautiful gopuram, like so many in southern India. Amazing colourful figures. And I can see my favorite God, Ganesha there. I always travel with a small Ganesha for luck.

Salut cher Stephen
I saw a temple of the same name - and same design - in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This part of the temple, the gopuram, is intriguing. I love the colours and the way it seems to stab through the clouds. A 10 year old photo that has lasted very well!
