Photographer’s Note

5.46p.m. - This shot was taken during a rehearsal for the Singapore National Day’s parade. A few floats were lined up in front of Raffles Hotel and I saw this one with Parameswara standing at the bow aiming his arrow. He is to shoot a lion and that’s how the island came to be known as Singapura. “Singa” means lion in Malay. Parameswara later moved to mainland Malaya and founded Malacca. In 1416 he embraced islam and took the title of Megat Iskandar Shah.
Stamford Raffles on the other hand arrived in Singapore on the 28 January 1819 as he was asked by the East India Company to look for an alternative port further south as Penang is far in the north. He took the advantage of the power struggle between Sultan Abdul Rahman and Sultan Hussein. He installed Sultan Hussein as the rightful Sultan of Johore as Sultan Abdul Rahman was put up by the Bugis and the Dutch. That was how Singapore came under British influence.
So I find the meeting of this two important figures in the history of Singapore interesting and worth recording.

PP- Adjusted colour level and sharpness.
