Photographer’s Note

I agree that timber framing in front of the beautiful church is not looks so pretty, and I decided to show you another picture from different side and continue the story about the architect who built this church at the end of 17th century.

On this picture, there is no impressive sun light as like on my previous photo, but here you can see correct proportions (dimensions) of the tower, because of I took this photo from far distance.
Here is some more information about the architect, Yakov Bukhvostov, taken from the excellent book "Discovering the Moscow Countryside" written by Kathleen Berton Murrell:

"The architect of the Ubory church is not only known, but his tribulations have been recorded. Yakov Bukhvostov, born a serf of the Tatishchev family, was freed to pursue his career as a master stone mason by his enlightened owner. He contracted to complete the Sheremetiev church in two years but work at Ubory was held up by delivery of materials and, more importanly, by Sheremetiev himself who suddenly decided to add a tall cube to support the octagonal tires of the central tower. When Bukhvostov refused to demolish the partially completed building, Sheremetiev had him brought to court where he was sentenced to flailing by the knout. But Sheremetiev relented, the sentence was not carried out, and Bukhvostov completed the church in 1697 in the form desired by the client."
