Photographer’s Note

This marvelous Russian-style church was built in 1883-1907 on the spot where Emperor Alexander II was assassinated in March 1881 and was officially called the Resurrection of Christ Church (a.k.a. Church of Our Savior on the Spilled Blood). Both inside and outside, the church is decorated with unique mosaics, designed by the most prominent Russian artists of the time (V.M. Vasnetsov, M.V. Nesterov, M.A. Vrubel, etc.) and created in 1895-1907. From an architecture point of view it is an intruder in a city landscape that wanted to look mostly western, with clear references to Versailles and Italy.

The church was closed for services in the 1930s, when Bolsheviks were destroying churches nationwide. It was even due to destruction but was fortunately saved by the beginning of the Great Patriotic War in 1940. It has now been fully restorated.

This colorful Piter landmark is situated on "Naberezhnaia kanala Griboyedova", near Nevsky Prospekt and the Ermitazh. In my early TE days I posted another similar view of this church, but after scanning this one I found it looked better from a compo point of view, and this version also benefits from my improved PP restoration skills thanks to your knowledge sharing !
